Palantir (PLTR): the government contractor that became a commercial AI company

Five years ago, analysing Palantir meant reading Pentagon contract announcements and guessing how long the government would keep paying. Not anymore. This quarter Palantir's revenue nearly doubled, its commercial business passed its government business for the first time, and the company turned more than half of each revenue dollar into free cash. That's why we built Winvesta Crisps - to decode what's actually driving the companies you own, in plain language, before the consensus catches up. 60,000+ investors from all over India are already in. Most investors still think of Palantir as the secretive software firm that helps governments and armies analyse data. That framing is accurate and dangerously incomplete. On 2 November Palantir reported third quarter revenue of 2.31 billion dollars, up 96% from a year earlier, with a 62% adjusted operating margin and 1.22 billion dollars of adjusted free cash flow, per its Q3 2026 earnings release. The sentence that mattered most came from chief executive Alex Karp: "Our U.S. commercial revenue has surpassed our U.S. government revenue for the first time in our company's history." The shares fell by almost 2.5% in early trading after the release, per XTB. The market was not questioning the quarter. It was questioning the price.

🏭 What Palantir actually is today

Palantir sells software that sits on top of an organisation's messy data and turns it into decisions. Its platforms, Gotham and Foundry, started life in intelligence agencies and defence ministries. Its Artificial Intelligence Platform, AIP, lets companies and agencies build AI agents and workflows that run on their own data inside Palantir's software, and it is the product behind most of the recent acceleration.

The customer base has widened quickly. Palantir had 1,090 customers at 30 September 2026, up from 911 a year earlier, per its Q3 2026 10-Q. The filing defines a customer as an organisation that generated revenue in the trailing twelve months, so the count includes government bodies and companies alike. No single customer accounted for more than 10% of revenue in the quarter.

It is also overwhelmingly an American story. The United States produced 1.94 billion dollars of the quarter's revenue, or 84%, up from 75% a year earlier, per the 10-Q. For Indian investors, that is worth holding in mind: this is a bet on American government budgets and American corporate adoption of AI, not a global one.

🧩 Segment breakdown: commercial overtakes government

Palantir reports two segments, Government and Commercial, and also discloses its US revenue split between the two. Both are in the table below. Total Commercial revenue rose 113% to 1.17 billion dollars, and total Government revenue rose 81% to 1.15 billion dollars, so Commercial is now the larger segment worldwide as well as in the United States, by our calculation from the 10-Q. In the US, commercial revenue grew 148% to 984 million dollars against 953 million dollars of government revenue, which grew 96%, per the earnings release. Rest of world is the residual after US revenue and grew far more slowly.

The consensus picture matters here. US government revenue of 953 million dollars compared with roughly 862 million dollars expected, and US commercial revenue of 984 million dollars compared with roughly 943 million dollars, per XTB. Both beat. The surprise was the government side, which many investors had treated as the slower leg.

⚡ The core strategic bet: AI that runs inside the customer's own data

The bet is that when an organisation wants AI to do real work, not just answer questions, it needs software that understands its data, its permissions and its rules, and that very few vendors can do that at scale. Palantir's pitch is that AIP is that layer. The numbers are consistent with it. US commercial remaining deal value, the contracted revenue still to be recognised, reached 6.52 billion dollars, up 79% year on year, per the earnings release. Palantir closed 64 deals worth 10 million dollars or more in the quarter, and 212 worth 1 million dollars or more.
