Most investors still think of Microsoft as the company that makes Windows, Office, and Teams. That framing made sense in 2018. In 2026, it misses the entire growth story. The business that just reported a record quarter on April 29, $82.9 billion in revenue, EPS of $4.27, and Azure growing 40%, is increasingly an AI cloud infrastructure company with a massive productivity software flywheel attached.

And yet the stock entered earnings down mid-teens year to date as of late April 2026, trading near the low-$420s, with analysts’ price targets averaging around $570. The market is fixated on a $190 billion capex bill and panicking. Investors who look past the spending to what it is building may find one of the more interesting setups in large-cap tech right now.

🍏 Current landscape

Microsoft is reporting into one of the most capital-intensive buildout cycles in technology history, and it is one of only three companies with the balance sheet to compete at the top.

The AI spending arms race is real and accelerating. Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft collectively guided toward roughly $725 billion in combined capital expenditure in 2026, per Bank of America estimates, after all four updated their forecasts in the same earnings week. The driver is not speculative capacity; it is genuine demand that is outpacing supply. CFO Amy Hood said on the earnings call that Microsoft expects to remain capacity-constrained on GPUs, CPUs, and storage through at least 2026, per CNBC. That is not a company building ahead of demand. That is a company struggling to build fast enough.

Memory and component prices have surged materially since late 2025. Hood attributed approximately $25 billion of the $190 billion 2026 capex guide to higher component pricing, per CNBC, a cost pass-through that is hitting every infrastructure provider simultaneously. Microsoft’s software-heavy revenue model means that while component costs are rising on the cost side, there is no meaningful tariff-driven supply chain exposure, the way hardware manufacturers face, a structural insulation that investors have started to notice.

Enterprise AI adoption has moved beyond experimentation to budget allocation. The $627 billion commercial remaining performance obligation, up 99% year over year, is the clearest evidence that large organisations are not testing Microsoft’s AI stack on monthly trials. They are making multi-year commitments. That is the most important number in the earnings release, and it is getting far less attention than the capex figure.

🏗️ What Microsoft actually sells now

Microsoft reports in three segments, and understanding which one is doing the heavy lifting matters more than most investors realise.

Intelligent Cloud is the engine. Azure and related services brought in $34.7 billion in Q3 FY2026, up 30% year over year, per the company’s earnings release. Azure specifically grew 40%, clearing the roughly 39% analysts had expected, per CNBC. This segment is running at a scale that puts it in direct competition with Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud.

Productivity and Business Processes are the flywheel. This segment, Office, LinkedIn, Dynamics, generated $35 billion in Q3, up 17% year over year, per Microsoft’s investor release. The key metric is no longer just Office seats. It is the Copilot attach rates. M365 Copilot now has over 20 million paid commercial seats, up from 15 million in January, and CEO Satya Nadella said on the earnings call that weekly engagement is approaching Outlook-like levels, per earnings commentary. That is a habit formation signal, not a vanity metric.

More Personal Computing, Windows, Xbox, Surface, Search, brought in $13.2 billion, down about 1% year over year. It is the legacy anchor. It matters for cash generation, not for the growth thesis.

The throughline: artificial intelligence is now embedded deeply enough to show up in the revenue numbers, not just in the product announcements. Microsoft Cloud revenue hit $54.5 billion for the quarter, up 29% year over year, per company filings.

🌀 Turning the tables

How is Microsoft repositioning from a productivity software vendor into a full-stack AI infrastructure and applications company?

Copilot is a new billing layer on top of everything Microsoft already owns

The Copilot story is more interesting than the seat count suggests. At roughly $30 per user per month, 20 million seats implies an annualised revenue stream of around $7 billion at US list prices, sitting on top of the existing M365 subscription base. But the more important dynamic is the shift toward agentic computing, AI agents that autonomously perform multi-step tasks rather than just answering questions. GitHub Copilot is moving from flat-fee subscriptions to a token-based consumption model starting June 2026, per GitHub’s official blog. The reason: agentic workflows consume dramatically more compute than simple code completions, and the old pricing model was not sustainable at the usage levels being generated. That shift mirrors what AWS did when it moved from reserved to pay-per-use, and it is structurally more valuable per power user over time.

Azure as the default infrastructure layer for the agentic era

Azure is the compute layer beneath most AI applications being built by enterprises globally. The $627 billion commercial RPO is the clearest signal: large enterprises are making multi-year commitments, not running experiments on monthly contracts. Cosmos DB, Microsoft’s cloud database product, grew 50% year over year, per earnings commentary. LinkedIn’s agentic products in talent solutions have crossed $450 million in annualised run rate, per management on the earnings call. AI monetisation is spreading across the entire platform, not concentrating in a single product line.

The OpenAI restructuring is a strategic clean-up, not a retreat.

Microsoft and OpenAI restructured their deal on April 27, ending the exclusive Azure lock-in, per CNBC. OpenAI can now serve customers on any cloud. But the new terms confirm Microsoft remains OpenAI’s primary cloud partner, and OpenAI products will ship first on Azure unless Microsoft cannot or chooses not to support the required capabilities. Microsoft retains a non-exclusive licence to OpenAI IP through 2032 and remains approximately a 27% diluted shareholder in OpenAI, per company filings. The market read this as weakness. The more accurate read: Microsoft exchanged exclusivity, which was always going to face regulatory scrutiny, for a long-term preferred-partner structure plus a large equity stake in the world's most valuable AI company. That is a cleaner position, not a lesser one.

Nvidia’s revenues now come from four main engines rather than just selling GPUs to gamers and data centres.

Data centre: This is the beast. In fiscal Q1 2026, Data Centre revenue hit $39.1 billion, up 73% year-on-year, representing roughly 88% of total company revenue of $44.1 billion. Nvidia doesn’t just sell H100 or Blackwell chips—it sells entire systems (DGX pods), networking (InfiniBand via Mellanox), and increasingly, cloud instances through partnerships. Hyperscalers like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are buying at scale, but so are sovereign AI projects, enterprises, and AI-native startups. This segment is the money-printing machine.

Gaming: Once Nvidia’s core, Gaming now accounts for a much smaller share of revenue, generating $3.8 billion in Q1 FY2026. Growth here is modest—low single digits—but stable. The RTX 40-series enjoys strong ASPs, and the upcoming RTX 50-series could give it a refresh. Gaming acts as a reliable base load and keeps Nvidia’s brand visible to millions of consumers.

Professional visualisation and automotive: These smaller segments are strategically vital. ProViz serves designers, architects, and content creators with Quadro and RTX workstations. Automotive is where robotics starts to appear. Nvidia’s Drive platform powers autonomous vehicle compute, and its Omniverse software simulates factories and robot behaviour.

Networking: Mellanox’s InfiniBand and Ethernet switches are now critical connective tissue in AI clusters. As models scale, communication bandwidth between GPUs becomes the bottleneck—making networking an increasingly important part of Nvidia’s overall platform.

In other words, “Nvidia” is now an end-to-end AI infrastructure company, not just a chip designer.

🌪️ The robotics wave as a tailwind: From labs to loading docks

Huang’s robotics thesis isn’t speculative. It’s grounded in a simple reality: AI models have conquered language and vision, and the next frontier is action in the physical world. Nvidia is positioned to supply the compute, simulation, and inference engines that make humanoid robots, autonomous vehicles, and smart factories possible.

Embodied AI demand: Companies like Tesla, Figure AI, Boston Dynamics (now under Hyundai), and dozens of Chinese startups are building humanoid robots. Each one requires real-time inference, sensor fusion, and motor control—compute-intensive tasks that need Nvidia’s Jetson or Orin chips. Nvidia appears to have a strong lead in this stack, with few rivals offering comparable breadth across hardware, software, and simulation.

Omniverse as the training ground: Nvidia’s Omniverse platform lets companies simulate factories, train robots in virtual environments, and test edge cases without breaking real hardware. Inference at the edge: Training AI happens in data centres. Inference—running the trained model—happens everywhere: in cars, robots, drones, and smart cameras. Nvidia’s Jetson Orin and upcoming Thor chips dominate edge AI, especially where power efficiency and real-time performance matter. As robots move from R&D to deployment, inference chip volumes will explode.

For a firm that monetises compute at every layer, robotics means recurring hardware sales, software subscriptions, and cloud inference revenue—all at once.

Markets are doing that thing where a structural story and a tactical setup arrive simultaneously, and suddenly everyone wants in. The US-China tariff war, which briefly saw bilateral reciprocal tariff rates spike past 100% in April 2025, has settled into something far more manageable. The US Supreme Court struck down IEEPA-based tariffs in February 2026, per Holland and Knight’s trade briefing. Trump replaced them with a 10% Section 122 tariff valid through July 24 2026. And crucially, the November 2025 US-China bilateral truce, which significantly reduced the specific April 2025 escalation tariffs on both sides, now extends through November 10 2026, per reporting from China Briefing and the Congressional Research Service. The “China reopening” narrative has upgraded itself into a “China rerating” thesis.

MCHI, FXI, and KWEB have all responded. The one-year total return on MCHI came in around 31% in USD over the 12 months to December 31 2025, per BlackRock iShares performance data. FXI trades at a low-teens forward P/E on many sell-side estimates, roughly half the S&P500's mid-20s multiple, with a trailing dividend yield in the mid-2% range. And KWEB, the most beaten-up of the three, holds some of the hottest AI names by monthly active users, including Alibaba, Baidu, and Tencent.

Here is what nobody is telling you: if you own VT, EEM, or any emerging markets fund, you already own China. You do not know how much. The question is not” Should I buy China?” It is “Do I know my real exposure before I add more?”

Let me introduce you to someone who might be you.

🎯 Meet Meera

Meera, 33, product manager at a Bengaluru fintech. Portfolio: ₹38 lakhs across US markets through Winvesta. She built her allocation over three years following a sensible-sounding framework: VT for global diversification, QQQ for tech growth, Apple because “everyone uses iPhones,” and EEM because her finance-savvy colleague kept saying emerging markets are cheap.

Here is what Meera thinks she owns versus what she actually owns:

Now she is reading headlines about the tariff truce and the KWEB AI story, and she is seriously considering adding ₹3 lakhs directly into MCHI. If she does that without accounting for her existing exposure, her real China allocation jumps to roughly ₹4.35 to ₹4.59 lakhs, or close to 11-12% of the portfolio.

That is not diversification. That is an undeclared, concentrated bet on a single geopolitical relationship.

What happened to Meera when tariff escalation peaked in April-May 2025:

When US-China tariffs hit extreme levels, EEM sold off sharply, VT dropped on its China weight, and Apple fell on supply chain fears and China revenue concerns. Her “safe, diversified” portfolio behaved like a single correlated trade, because the China risk was spread across every fund she owned. The tariff truce brought it all back. But she could not explain why her portfolio moved in either direction.

That inability to explain the move is the trap.

📊 What the three funds actually give you

Before looking at flows, it is worth understanding what MCHI, FXI, and KWEB actually hold, because these are not interchangeable China plays.

KWEB is the most interesting story right now. Alibaba's Qwen model family surpassed 700 million downloads on Hugging Face as of January 2026, making it the world’s most widely used open-source AI system, according to data cited by the South China Morning Post. Baidu's ERNIE Bot and Tencent’s Hunyuan platform are among the top 10 global AI applications by monthly active users as of January 2026, per Statista data cited by KraneShares. KWEB companies collectively grew their AI and cloud-attributable revenue roughly 12% year-over-year in 2025, per KraneShares company data.

But KWEB is also the most scarred: it remains roughly 50% below its 2021 peak, even after the recent rally. It is the highest-beta, highest-conviction play of the three. If you are right, it rips. If you are wrong or early, it grinds.

FXI is the trader's vehicle: deep options activity, tight spreads, SOE-heavy, more stimulus-sensitive than AI-sensitive. On many sell-side estimates, it trades at a low-teens forward P/E versus the S&P500's mid-20s multiple, with a trailing dividend yield in the mid-2% range, providing a partial buffer while you wait. If you believe Beijing will continue to push fiscal support, FXI is the cleaner expression. If you believe in platform rerating and China AI, MCHI or KWEB is the call.

Here is the divergence worth watching: KWEB’s inflow velocity has accelerated sharply, driven by a combination of the AI narrative and tariff-truce headlines. That is exactly the pattern seen in October 2024, when Beijing announced stimulus measures and Asian ETFs surged. Retail money chased the story. Institutions trimmed into the move. KWEB gave back most of its gains over the following weeks as stimulus details disappointed and the carry-trade math reset. The structural thesis turned out to be real. The entry point turned out to matter anyway.

Institutions are returning to China. The question is whether you are arriving with them or after them.

🧠 The psychology trap

Right now, the China bull thesis is assembling itself out of genuinely real pieces:

✅ “The IEEPA tariffs are legally dead, and the bilateral truce holds through November 2026.”

✅ “China is trading at roughly half the US market’s P/E. That is a generational discount”.

✅ "Alibaba's Qwen has 700 million downloads. China IS the other AI story”.

✅ “The Section 122 tariffs are only 10%. The worst tariff escalation is clearly behind us”.

Every one of these is factually grounded. But here is the cognitive trap: these arguments have been partially true for the last two years, during which KWEB remained deeply below its 2021 peak,k and FXI underperformed. What changed is not the thesis. What changed was that the price action improved, making the thesis feel more convincing.

That is recency bias wearing a value-investing outfit.

Most investors hear “Amazon” and picture a cardboard box at the door. That is fair. Amazon runs the world’s most visited online marketplace, ships a massive portion of all US e-commerce packages, and employs more people than most countries’ military forces. The problem is that the cardboard-box framing completely misses where the money is made. Amazon’s retail business, the thing most people think the company is, runs on thin single-digit margins and has been squeezed further by tariffs in 2026, per recent management commentary and public reporting.

The parts of Amazon that are genuinely compounding are its cloud infrastructure business, which holds roughly 31% of the global cloud market per industry estimates, and an advertising business that generated more than $68 billion in full-year 2025 revenue and has quietly become the world’s third-largest digital ad platform, behind only Google and Meta, per company filings and industry data. This is not a transformation story. It is a revelation about what Amazon has always been building, not about how most investors have described it.

📦 Not one company, but four

The way Amazon reports its results hides the real story. Most coverage leads with total revenue, which crossed approximately $717 billion for full-year 2025, per public reporting. That number tells you almost nothing useful on its own. The business is four distinct operations running under one roof, each with dramatically different economics.

North America retail is the familiar story: online stores, third-party marketplace fees, Prime memberships, and fulfilment logistics across the US, Canada, and Mexico. It generates enormous revenue but operates on margins far thinner than the other segments. Tariff pressure in 2026 has made life harder for the millions of third-party sellers who populate the marketplace. Jassy has acknowledged in recent public appearances that tariffs are creating price pressure for marketplace sellers and are showing up in consumer prices, and that the inventory buffer many sellers had pre-built largely ran out by late 2025, per recent reporting.

International retail covers everything outside North America. It ran at a loss for years as Amazon invested in infrastructure across the UK, Germany, Japan, India, and newer markets. That is not e-commerce spend. That is an infrastructure ownership thesis.

AWS is where the economics get genuinely interesting. The cloud segment posted $35.6 billion in revenue in Q4 2025 alone, growing 24% year-over-year and at its fastest rate in 13 quarters, per company disclosures. Operating margin at AWS runs around 35%, meaning the cloud business generated approximately $12.5 billion in operating income in a single quarter. AWS holds roughly 31% of the global cloud market share, according to industry estimates, ahead of Microsoft Azure in the mid-20s and Google Cloud at around 11%.

The advertising business is the one most investors still overlook. Amazon’s ad services generated more than $68 billion in full-year 2025 revenue, growing at around 22% year-over-year, per company filings and industry estimates. That makes it the third-largest digital advertising platform on the planet. The ad business does not have the household name recognition of Google or Meta, but it has something neither of them has: closed-loop purchase data. When a brand advertises on Amazon, it can measure exactly how many units are sold as a direct result. That measurement capability is pulling TV budgets, branded search spend, and retail media dollars into Amazon at an accelerating pace.

🚀 The dual engines: AWS and advertising

The two Amazon businesses compounding fastest are the two with the least obvious connection to cardboard boxes.

AWS: Custom silicon and the AI infrastructure bet

Amazon is making an enormous bet that AI compute demand will remain insatiable for the better part of this decade. The 2026 capital expenditure plan stands at approximately $200 billion, predominantly for AWS infrastructure, per management's guidance on the Q4 2025 earnings call. That is roughly double what the company spent in 2025 and one of the largest corporate infrastructure commitments in US history.

What makes the bet coherent is the backlog sitting behind it. AWS’s contracted revenue backlog approached the mid-$200 billion range at the end of Q4 2025, growing substantially faster than reported revenue, per company disclosures and subsequent analysis. These are signed enterprise commitments, not pipeline projections. Per CEO Andy Jassy’s remarks, AWS added more absolute revenue in 2025 than either Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud.

The AI angle runs deeper than just selling cloud capacity. Amazon has built its own silicon: Trainium chips for AI training and Inferentia chips for inference, which together are approaching a roughly $20 billion annual revenue run rate and growing at triple-digit year-over-year rates, per Jassy’s commentary. Bedrock, Amazon’s managed AI service that lets enterprises deploy large language models on proprietary data within AWS infrastructure, crossed a multi-billion-dollar annualised run rate, with customer spend growing by around 60% quarter-over-quarter, per company disclosures.

The custom chip strategy matters because it gives Amazon pricing leverage over Nvidia-dependent workloads. Trainium3, with claimed 40% better price-performance than the prior generation, per the company, makes it structurally cheaper to run AI workloads on AWS than on competing clouds that rely entirely on Nvidia GPUs. Amazon has also committed approximately $25 billion to Anthropic across multiple investment tranches, per public reporting, giving AWS a deep integration with one of the leading AI labs and a reason to exist in every enterprise AI conversation.

Amazon Ads: The closed-loop advantage

Amazon’s advertising business has an architecture that Google and Meta genuinely cannot replicate. When someone searches for a product on Amazon, buys it, and the brand then retargets that buyer across Fire TV, Prime Video, and sponsored display placements, Amazon has complete purchase-to-conversion data across the entire journey. Google has search intent. Meta has audience targeting. Amazon has the purchase receipt. That closed-loop visibility is what is pulling retail media budgets toward Amazon at a pace that is still early relative to the total addressable market.

Prime Video is the newest and fastest-growing inventory layer. Amazon launched advertising across all Prime Video programming in 2024 and reported an average monthly ad-supported audience of 315 million viewers globally, up from 200 million disclosed in April 2024, per Deadline. This audience spans 16 countries, including India, and gives Amazona premium video inventory that competes directly with traditional broadcast television budgets. Q4 2025 advertising revenue came in at $21.3 billion, up about 22% year-over-year, per company filings.

The week began with the Nasdaq snapping a 13-session winning streak—one of the longest runs in decades—as fresh Iran war tensions hit Monday’s open. By Wednesday, President Trump’s ceasefire extension sent the S&P 500 and Nasdaq to new records, fully erasing all losses from the Iran war. Then, on Thursday, the software sector delivered a wipeout—ServiceNow and IBM both cratered on guidance disappointment, pulling Microsoft, Palantir, and Oracle down with them. But after the Thursday bell, Intel changed the narrative entirely: a blowout quarter that sent the stock surging approximately 15-19% in after-hours trade. Heading into Friday’s close, the semiconductor sector was primed for its 18th consecutive session of gains. The week, in aggregate, was roughly flat for the major indexes—but the path there was anything but calm.

Market recap 📊

The S&P 500 spent the week broadly in the mid-7,000s, while the Nasdaq moved between approximately 24,260 and 24,658—the latter a fresh all-time high close, per Morningstar. The Dow broadly tracked the same mood swings, per CNBC.

Monday opened cautiously lower as weekend news of escalating US-Iran tensions, including reports that the Navy had seized an Iranian-flagged vessel, weighed on risk appetite. The Nasdaq snapped a 13-day winning streak—one of its longest runs in decades, per CNBC. The S&P 500 shed roughly a quarter of a per cent while the Dow barely moved. The Russell 2000, however, scored a new all-time closing record—a rare sign of broadening participation.

Tuesday turned more anxious as hopes for a peace deal faded. Senior US officials’ planned talks in Pakistan were reported to be delayed due to a lack of commitment from Tehran, per The New York Times and Axios. The ceasefire was set to expire on Wednesday evening. The S&P 500 fell roughly 0.6%, the Nasdaq around the same, while oil climbed back above the high-$80s. Amazon, however, popped roughly 3% after announcing it would invest up to tens of billions of dollars in Anthropic over several years as part of an expanded AI infrastructure deal, according to media reports.

Wednesday was the week’s defining session. Shortly after Tuesday’s close, President Trump extended the ceasefire indefinitely, citing Iran’s government being “seriously fractured.” Markets surged: the S&P 500 jumped around 1% to close in the high-7,100s, and the Nasdaq added roughly 1.64% to settle at 24,657.57—both recording new all-time highs, per CNBC and Morningstar. The Dow gained approximately 340 points. GE Vernova soared roughly 8-13% on a strong earnings beat and raised guidance, Boeing added around 3% on a better-than-expected quarterly loss, and chip names broadly surged, with Broadcom, AMD, and Micron each gaining somewhere between 5% and 8%, per Reuters.

Thursday pulled back sharply from those records. Oil pushed into the mid-$90s per barrel on WTI after reports that Iran’s parliament speaker resigned from the US negotiating team, per Bloomberg. Software stocks bore the brunt: ServiceNow fell about 17%, and IBM dropped about 9% after their earnings calls disappointed investors, dragging Microsoft, Palantir, Oracle, and the broader iShares Tech-Software ETF (IGV) down significantly, per CNBC. The S&P 500 closed down roughly 0.41% to 7,108.4,0 and the Nasdaq fell approximately 0.89% to 24,438.50, per CNBC. After the bell, Intel posted its most stunning quarterly result in years—and the tone for Friday was set.

Friday saw the semiconductor rally take over, with Intel’s blowout after-hours result from Thursday carrying through to the open. Heading into the close, the major indexes were on track for a modestly positive finish on the day, with the week ending in roughly the same neighbourhood where it started—but via an extraordinarily volatile detour.

Sentiment watch 😶‍🌫️

The VIX closed Thursday near the high teens—elevated by war uncertainty,nty but nowhere near the panic levels one might expect given oil spiking toward $96 and a near-record software selloff in the same session. That contained VIX reading tells an important story: the market largely treats the Iran war as a negotiated outcome waiting to happen, not an existential threat to equity valuations.

The more pronounced shift in sentiment data was the divergence between mega-cap tech and the rest of the market. The Nasdaq’s 13-day win streak was built overwhelmingly on AI infrastructure names and semiconductor momentum. The Thursday session, where fewer than a third of NYSE and Nasdaq issues advanced even as indexes hit intraday all-time highs earlier in the day, confirmed that breadth is thinner than the headline numbers suggest. The market is not running broadly—it’s running on a relatively narrow engine of chips and AI compute.

Today’s Apple simultaneously operates the world’s most profitable consumer electronics business, a services platform that crossed $109 billion in annual revenue in FY2025 with gross margins above 70%, and a closed-loop AI ecosystem powered by proprietary silicon that no Android manufacturer can replicate at the device level. It processes over a billion transactions through the App Store, manages cloud storage for hundreds of millions of users, and is now deploying Apple Intelligence, on-device AI built directly into its A18 and M-series chips, across an installed base that spans every continent.

The transformation isn’t cosmetic. Tim Cook has methodically shifted Apple’s revenue mix from hardware-dependent to services-augmented, building what is arguably the most defensible consumer technology franchise in the world: a closed ecosystem where switching costs are high, personal data stays on-device, and every new product or software feature locks users in more deeply. The question for investors today isn’t whether Apple makes excellent products; it demonstrably does, but whether the market correctly prices a business that is simultaneously the world’s most profitable hardware maker and a fast-growing, high-margin software platform with AI optionality baked into every chip it designs.

iPhone

The original franchise still dominates, contributing roughly half of Apple’s approximately $391 billion in FY2024 revenue, per Apple’s official earnings release. iPhone 16 and 16 Pro launched in September 2024 with Apple Intelligence capabilities tied to the A18 chip, targeting hundreds of millions of older-model iPhones due for replacement. Average selling prices have held in the mid-$800s globally, per analyst estimates, as higher-end Pro models continue taking share within Apple’s own lineup. The introduction of AI features tied specifically to newer hardware creates an upgrade incentive disconnected from traditional camera or performance cycles; users now upgrade for on-device intelligence, not megapixels.

Services

This is the transformation story. Apple’s Services segment, comprising the App Store, Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, iCloud+, Apple Pay, Apple Card, and Apple Advertising, generated approximately $96 billion in FY2024 revenue, up roughly 13% year-over-year, per Apple’s earnings release. Gross margins on Services run above 70%, compared with roughly 35% for hardware, making each incremental dollar of Services revenue nearly twice as valuable to Apple’s bottom line. The segment has become the largest driver of Apple’s overall margin expansion. Services exceeded $109 billion in FY2025, up roughly 14% from FY2024, firmly past the $100 billion milestone that once seemed ambitious, per publicly available FY2025 data.

Mac and iPad

Mac revenue came in at approximately $30 billion in FY2024, driven by the M-series chip transition that has given Apple’s computers meaningful performance and energy-efficiency advantages over Intel-based Windows machines for specific workloads. iPad contributed approximately $26 billion. Both segments benefit from the broader Apple ecosystem flywheel; users who own an iPhone are meaningfully more likely to own a Mac and iPad, creating multi-device monetisation that no Android manufacturer can replicate at scale.

Wearables, Home, and Accessories

AirPods, Apple Watch, and HomeMini generated approximately $37 billion in FY2024, per Apple’s category reporting and analyst estimates, a business that rivals most Fortune 500 companies in scale, yet sits well below the headlines. Apple Watch holds the largest share of the global smartwatch market by revenue. AirPods dominate premium wireless audio. Both product lines are sticky: once inside the Apple ecosystem, users rarely switch to competitors because the iPhone integration is seamless, a quality that third-party alternatives cannot match.

Vision Pro and spatial computing

Apple’s Vision Pro launched in February 2024 at $3,499. Unit volumes remain small relative to iPhone, industry estimates place sales in the hundreds of thousands through 2024, not millions, and Apple does not disclose standalone Vision Pro figures. Vision Pro represents Apple’s long-horizon positioning for spatial computing, a category that may define the post-mobile era. The current product is best characterised as a developer and early-adopter platform; the mass-market version, if it arrives at a significantly lower price point, is the medium-term bet.

In other words, “Apple” is now a recurring-revenue platform with a high-margin software engine, AI infrastructure embedded in its chips, and hardware that functions primarily as a distribution mechanism, not the iPhone company clinging to upgrade cycles.

🌪️ Apple Intelligence and the AI upgrade cycle: A demand driver unlike any before it

The generative AI wave has reshaped device upgrade economics in a way that structurally benefits Apple more than any other consumer hardware maker, and the dynamics are still in their early stages.

On-device AI as the hardware upgrade incentive

Apple Intelligence requires the A17 Pro or A18 chip, found in the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 16 family, to run its full feature set on-device. Industry estimates suggest several hundred million iPhones globally are running on hardware older than the minimum requirement. As Apple Intelligence matures with each iOS release, deeper personalisation, more capable Siri, and third-party app integrations, the gap between eligible and ineligible devices widens. For creative professionals, developers, and small businesses handling sensitive data, the ability to run AI models entirely on-device, without data leaving the machine, is increasingly a selling point over cloud-dependent alternatives. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC initiative validates the category; Apple’s advantage is that it controls the hardware, operating system, and silicon design simultaneously, enabling the kind of co-optimisation that Qualcomm-based Windows machines can only approximate.

India and emerging markets are the structural growth frontier.

Apple’s revenue in India has grown substantially over recent years as the company has invested in local manufacturing and retail expansion. With iPhone production ramping at Tata-operated facilities, Apple is broadening its addressable market while hedging against geopolitical supply-chain concentration in China. India represents one of the largest pools of aspirational smartphone upgraders globally. As incomes rise and Apple’s brand positioning strengthens in the market, the company’s India trajectory could, over a longer arc, replicate what China delivered over the decade before current tensions.

For a firm that monetises both hardware and the services that attach to it, an AI-driven upgrade cycle typically means accelerated revenue and sticky services engagement from an expanding new-device base.

🕵️‍♀️ Services: The $100 billion software company hiding inside a hardware brand

One of the most strategically important businesses in global technology sits inside Apple’s earnings report, persistently underweighted by investors who still anchor to iPhone unit volumes.

App Store economics

The App Store generated an estimated $85 billion in gross developer billings in 2023, according to Sensor Tower's industry estimates, with Apple retaining 15–30% of transactions under its reported commission structure. Developer activity on iOS generates a flywheel: more developers build for iOS because consumer spending is highest there; higher-quality apps increase iPhone stickiness; stickier iPhones attract more developers. Epic Games’ legal challenge and the EU Digital Markets Act's requirements have mandated some adjustments to App Store rules in certain markets. Still, court outcomes have broadly preserved Apple’s core commission economics globally, though this remains an active regulatory risk.

Apple TV+ and the bundle moat

Apple TV+, priced at $9.99 per month in the US, has accumulated a growing library of prestige original content. Apple does not disclose subscriber counts, but industry estimates place the figure at 25–40 million globally. The strategic purpose of TV+ differs from Netflix’s: Apple doesn’t need it to be a standalone profit centre. It justifies a higher iCloud bundle price, reduces ecosystem churn, and generates an awards-season brand signal that reinforces Apple’s premium positioning. A smaller, curated library with a disproportionate critical profile, Ted Lasso, Severance, and The Morning Show, is the deliberate design.

iCloud and the storage escalator

iCloud generates predictable recurring subscription revenue from hundreds of millions of users storing photos, contacts, and device backups. Storage tiers range from 50GB at $0.99 per month to 2TB at $9.99, with higher-capacity options available above 2TB in many markets. As camera quality improves and video file sizes grow, users migrate toward higher tiers over time, creating a built-in revenue escalator. The business is high-margin, highly predictable, and has essentially zero customer acquisition cost, since every new iPhone sale automatically expands the addressable market for iCloud.

Apple Pay and financial services

Apple Pay processes trillions of dollars in transaction volume annually, per industry estimates, making it one of the world’s largest mobile payment platforms by usage in markets like the US, UK, and Australia. Tap to Pay, which allows iPhones to accept card payments directly, without additional hardware, positions Apple as a potential disruptor of the small-business payments infrastructure layer. Apple’s financial services moves are consistent and incremental; no single product dominates, but the cumulative positioning across payments, lending, and savings builds lock-in at a layer most investors don’t price in.

Consider Arjun, an investor in Bengaluru holding AAPL for two years: each year his cost basis looks more attractive, not because the phone got better, but because the services attached to the phone, Apple Music, iCloud, TV+, keep compounding in value and margin, independent of whether he upgraded his handset.

In April 2026, the US-China relationship is in a state that would have been hard to imagine a decade ago. Tariffs on Chinese goods have reached historically elevated levels — far above pre-2018 norms and among the highest in the post-war era — following what we at Winvesta call Liberation Day. Export controls on advanced semiconductors and chip-making equipment have progressively tightened. China has retaliated with its own restrictions on critical minerals, rare earths, and technology licences. The two largest economies on earth are not just in a trade dispute. They are engaged in a deliberate, multi-front effort to reduce dependence on each other — and that process is creating winners and losers across every sector of the US market in predictable ways, once you know what to look for.

How US-China became arguably the most consequential economic relationship on earth 🌏

The story of US-China economic integration is one of the great globalisation experiments of the modern era — and understanding why it’s unwinding requires understanding how deeply it was built.

Starting in the 1990s and accelerating after China joined the World Trade Organisation in 2001, US companies discovered something powerful: China offered a combination of low labour costs, improving infrastructure, a massive and rapidly expanding consumer market, and a government willing to attract foreign manufacturing. The result was a decades-long migration of manufacturing capacity — textiles, electronics, furniture, appliances, and ultimately semiconductors and advanced components — into Chinese factories.

By the mid-2010s, the integration was profound. Apple’s iPhones were designed in California and assembled in Zhengzhou. Walmart’s shelves were stocked substantially with Chinese-manufactured goods. US companies were generating significant revenue from Chinese consumers. And China’s growth model was, in turn, deeply dependent on access to US technology, US capital markets, and US consumer demand.

Both sides benefited enormously from this arrangement. Both also became dependent on it in ways that created strategic vulnerabilities — and it’s the recognition of those vulnerabilities, more than any single political decision, that is driving the current decoupling.

The shift didn’t happen overnight. The seeds were planted during the 2018–2019 trade war under the first Trump administration, accelerated through the COVID-19 pandemic (which exposed supply chain fragility), and then hardened dramatically in 2022 when the US imposed sweeping export controls on advanced semiconductor technology — and again in 2025 with Liberation Day’s tariff regime. Each escalation made the next one easier to justify, and harder to reverse.

The four fault lines reshaping the relationship right now 🔧

1. Tariffs and trade barriers

Following the renewed tariff escalation in 2025, US effective tariffs on Chinese goods reached multidecade highs by modern standards — well above pre-2018 levels, according to major economic research and index providers. China responded with its own retaliatory tariffs on US exports — agricultural products, aircraft, and industrial goods among the most affected. This isn’t just a cost story. It’s a structural signal: both governments are willing to accept near-term economic pain in exchange for reducing long-run dependency. That signal changes how companies plan their supply chains for the next decade, not just the next quarter.

2. Semiconductor export controls

This is arguably the most consequential front in the US-China technology conflict. The US has progressively tightened restrictions on the export of advanced semiconductors and the equipment used to manufacture them — particularly targeting chips that could accelerate China’s artificial intelligence and military capabilities. Companies like NVIDIA saw restrictions on certain chip sales to China tightened in successive rounds. The Netherlands, Japan, and other allies were brought into the framework, limiting China’s access to the most advanced chip-making equipment from global suppliers like ASML. China has responded by accelerating its own domestic semiconductor investment, though catching up at the cutting edge remains a multi-year challenge, per industry analysts.

3. Critical minerals and rare earths

China controls a dominant share of global rare-earth processing capacity, according to the US Geological Survey. In recent years, China has imposed and tightened export controls on several critical minerals and rare earth elements used in defence systems, electric vehicles, and semiconductor manufacturing — a direct counter to US technology export controls. This dependency on Chinese processing for materials critical to clean energy and advanced technology is one of the most underappreciated structural vulnerabilities in Western supply chains, and it’s now an active policy pressure point.

4. Taiwan

The geopolitical risk that sits underneath all of the above. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) manufactures a dominant share of the world’s most advanced chips — those used in everything from smartphones to data centre AI accelerators. Taiwan’s political status and the risk of Chinese military action, therefore, are not abstract geopolitical concerns but direct tail risks embedded in the valuation of almost every major US technology company. Markets are not fully pricing this risk on most days — but it surfaces in volatility spikes whenever tensions escalate, which is why the US has been aggressively subsidising domestic semiconductor manufacturing through initiatives like the CHIPS Act.

Decoupling: What’s actually happened, and what hasn’t 📊

“Decoupling” is a word that gets used loosely. The reality is more nuanced — in some areas, separation has moved fast; in others, it has barely begun.

Where decoupling is real and accelerating: Supply chain geography has shifted meaningfully. The phrase “China plus one” — maintaining some China operations while building parallel capacity elsewhere — went from strategy-deck buzzword to operational reality after the 2025 tariff escalation. Vietnam, India, and Mexico emerged as the primary beneficiaries of redirected investment, according to reports from the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal. Apple accelerated iPhone production in India. Electronics and apparel brands moved sourcing across Southeast Asia. This physical relocation of production is slow and expensive, but it is happening.

Technology access has been materially restricted. Advanced semiconductor exports, certain software licences, and investment in specific Chinese technology sectors have been limited by US policy in ways that were unimaginable five years ago.

Where decoupling is slower than the headlines suggest: Consumer goods, lower-tech manufacturing, and commodity flows remain deeply interconnected. US retailers still source meaningfully from China for goods below the tariff sensitivity threshold. Many US companies still generate significant revenue from Chinese consumers — Apple, Starbucks, Nike, and others have large Chinese market exposures that they have no near-term ability or desire to exit. Full decoupling in these areas would require restructuring that would take years and cost, which would visibly hurt margins.

Financial market linkages remain substantial. Chinese companies listed on US exchanges (the ADR market), US institutional ownership of Chinese equities, and bilateral technology licensing arrangements haven’t been unwound at anything like the speed of the trade restrictions.

Winners and losers: The sector map 🏆

US-China decoupling doesn’t affect all sectors equally. Understanding the exposure map is one of the most practical things an investor can do in this environment.

Sectors under meaningful pressure

Technology hardware and semiconductors carry the most acute exposure — both from direct export control restrictions and from supply chain complexity. Companies reliant on Chinese manufacturing or Chinese customer revenue face a structural drag that doesn’t resolve quickly. The restriction on selling advanced AI chips into China is a direct revenue constraint for companies at the frontier of that market.

Consumer discretionary brands with heavy revenue in China — apparel, luxury goods, and consumer electronics — face a more complex picture. Their Chinese consumer business is valuable and hard to replace. Still, it is increasingly subject to political risk on both sides: US policy pressure and Chinese consumer nationalism, which has periodically shifted domestic buyers toward Chinese alternatives.

Automotive companies operating global supply chains face tariff pressure on both imported vehicles and components, as well as competitive pressure in the Chinese EV market, where domestic players have moved aggressively.

Sectors with structural tailwinds

Domestic US manufacturers and defence-adjacent industrials benefit from both the reshoring narrative and government investment in supply chain resilience. Companies involved in domestic chip fabrication, defence electronics, and strategic materials processing are in an unusual sweet spot, with policy and economics pointing in the same direction.

Contract manufacturers and logistics companies facilitating the “China plus one” transition — building factories in Vietnam, India, and Mexico, moving goods through new trade routes — are direct beneficiaries of the supply chain reorganisation.

Semiconductor equipment companies not subject to China restrictions (and those successfully pivoting away from China revenue) have seen demand from new fabs being built in the US, Japan, and Europe under government-backed programmes.

The nuanced middle

Most large US multinationals don’t sit cleanly in “winner” or “loser” — they’re managing a complex balancing act. A company like Apple is simultaneously moving production to India (a China-plus-one move that reflects decoupling) while trying to protect its significant revenue from Chinese consumers (a reason to avoid fully decoupling). How companies navigate this tension — and how much of the eventual cost they can pass to consumers or absorb in margins — is where the differentiation lies.

The India angle: Threat, opportunity, or both? 🇮🇳

For Indian investors holding US equities through platforms like Winvesta, the US-China story adds a layer of complexity beyond portfolio positioning.

India is a manufacturing beneficiary. India has been one of the primary destinations for capital for supply chain diversification. This is a structural tailwind for Indian manufacturing, employment, and GDP — and it shows up in the earnings of Indian IT and industrial companies that service these transitions.

The Indian IT services connection. India’s listed IT sector — Infosys, TCS, Wipro, and others — generates a substantial share of revenue from US corporate clients. When US companies tighten technology capex due to tariff uncertainty or US-China friction affecting their own margins, Indian IT order books feel it. Liberation Day’s disruption to US corporate planning showed this channel clearly. It’s a reason why US-China macro stress reaches Indian domestic markets through earnings, not just portfolio outflows.

India’s own tariff exposure. India navigated earlier rounds of US tariffs with lower direct exposure than China or Vietnam. In recent years, however, some Indian export categories have faced higher US tariffs or greater trade scrutiny than before. Indian pharmaceutical and textile exporters carry greater direct exposure than IT services, which largely escapes goods-tariff frameworks. When US-China tensions spike, and emerging-market risk aversion rises, India often experiences portfolio outflows alongside other EM destinations — even when India itself is a structural beneficiary of the realignment. The short-term and long-term effects can point in opposite directions. The discipline is knowing which timeframe you’re reacting to.

What to watch: The signals that actually matter 🧭

Investors who track US-China dynamics effectively don’t watch every headline. They watch for specific signals that tend to move the needle.

Tariff escalation or de-escalation. New tariff announcements — or exemption lists or bilateral negotiation signals — still sharply affect affected sectors. Having a basic tracking habit for trade policy announcements saves you from reactive scrambling.

Export control tightening. When the US Commerce Department adds companies to the entity list or announces new restrictions on chip sales to China, the impact on semiconductor earnings estimates needs to be re-run. These are often priced in advance of time, based on industry commentary, so watching earnings call guidance from semiconductor companies is a useful leading indicator.

Critical mineral supply disruptions. Chinese restrictions on rare-earth or mineral exports can move materials and defence-sector stocks sharply.

Corporate guidance language. Every earnings season, listen carefully to what management teams at companies with significant China exposure say about revenue outlook, supply chain costs, and their “China plus one” progress. The guidance language tells you more about how decoupling is actually landing than the headline trade data.

Taiwan's geopolitical temperature. Military exercises, political statements, and US arms sales to Taiwan are the leading indicators for the tail risk premium. Common mistakes investors make with China risk ⚠️

Treating “US tech” as a homogeneous China exposure. A cloud software company generating 95% of its revenue domestically in the US has almost no exposure in China. A hardware manufacturer with China-assembled products and Chinese consumer revenue has enormous exposure. Lumping them together under “tech” produces poor risk assessments and poor portfolio decisions.

Assuming decoupling happens fast. The political rhetoric of “decoupling” moves faster than actual supply chains do. Building a factory, training a workforce, qualifying a new supplier, and shipping products through new logistics routes takes years. Companies that announce “China plus one” strategies in 2024 are still executing them in 2027. Don’t price in the outcome before the transition is complete.

Ignoring the China revenue side of US companies. Most coverage focuses on China as a sourcing risk, where goods are made. The revenue risk — how much US companies sell to Chinese consumers — is equally important and often less discussed. A company that shifts manufacturing out of China but still derives 20% of its revenue from Chinese consumers remains significantly exposed to China.

Over-reacting to every bilateral headline. US-China tensions produce a constant flow of headlines that often move stocks intraday but have little long-run impact on earnings. The discipline is distinguishing policy changes with structural earnings consequences — such as new export controls and permanent tariff levels — from the diplomatic noise that surrounds them.

Assuming India captures all of China’s lost manufacturing. India is a meaningful beneficiary of supply chain diversification, but so are Vietnam, Mexico, and increasingly Southeast Asian economies. The “China to India” thesis is directionally correct but overstated if taken as a simple substitution story. India benefits significantly but competes for those flows.

The bottom line 🏁

US-China decoupling is not a political story with occasional market implications. It is a structural economic reorganisation that is actively reshaping supply chains, access to technology, corporate earnings, and geopolitical risk premiums across the entire US equity market.

For investors, the practical edge isn’t picking a side in the geopolitical argument — it’s understanding the exposure map of what you own. Which companies are net beneficiaries of reshoring and domestic investment? Which carry structural headwinds from losing China market access or facing higher input costs? Which are managing a transition that will take years and compress margins along the way?

The SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD) surged to a 2026 high above $500 per share in late January, then pulled back to the mid-$440s, still up sharply on the year. Your investing group chats are full of screenshots. Financial media is running “gold bull market has further to run” headlines every other day. And somewhere between Trump’s tariff spiral, a structurally pressured dollar, and central banks buying bullion at levels not seen in the post-Cold War era, a “boring hedge” has quietly become one of 2026’s best-performing assets.

Here’s what nobody is saying out loud: when a safe-haven asset has surged this sharply and is now pulling back from peaks, it is no longer acting like a haven. It’s acting like momentum. And the retail investors rushing into GLD today deserve to ask a harder question than “gold always goes up when things are uncertain.”

But here’s the cognitive trap: all of those arguments were also true twelve months ago, when gold was trading around $3,300 — well before this latest leg higher. The commodity didn’t change. The structural story didn’t change. What changed is that the price surged past $5,000 in late January — with some reports of intraday spikes into the mid-$5,000s — and has since pulled back, which made everyone who wasn’t paying attention suddenly pay attention. You’re not responding to new information. You’re responding to price action dressed up as thesis validation.

Intel is betting that “good enough” AI chips at lower cost will capture share once the training boom matures into inference at scale.

Sovereign chip strategies

Europe and the U.S. are pouring subsidies into domestic semiconductor manufacturing. Intel’s German fab project and Ohio complex align perfectly with this trend. For a firm that earns margins on both manufacturing services and chip sales, AI-driven capacity scarcity and geopolitical reshoring mean pricing power and strategic relevance could return after years in the wilderness.

🤖 AI integration everywhere: From Gaudi accelerators to Core Ultra inference

Intel is not just benefiting from the AI wave—it is embedding AI capabilities across its entire product stack, from cloud to edge.

Gaudi data centre accelerators

Intel’s Gaudi 2 and Gaudi 3 chips target AI training and inference in hyperscale data centres. Gaudi 3, launched in 2025, delivers what Intel claims is up to 4x the training performance of Gaudi 2 on certain benchmarks, with integrated HBM memory providing high bandwidth for large model workloads. Intel argues that the total cost of ownership is lower than NVIDIA's for certain inference tasks, citing memory bandwidth efficiency and lower power consumption. Early adopters include Stability AI and Hugging Face. For nearly 80 years, the US dollar has been the world’s default currency—the language of oil contracts, trade invoices, central bank reserves, and emergency bailouts. You didn’t think about it. It was just the way things worked.

That assumption is being tested in 2025 in ways that feel different from previous episodes. The dollar has weakened meaningfully against a basket of major currencies since the start of the year, central banks around the world have been quietly accumulating gold at a record pace, and a growing coalition of countries is actively building infrastructure to settle trade outside the dollar system. None of this is happening overnight. But the direction of travel is real—and for investors holding US assets from India, it has direct consequences for your returns, your risk, and how you think about currency as a variable in your portfolio.

How the dollar became the world’s reserve currency 🏛️

The dollar’s dominance didn’t happen by accident—it was designed.

In July 1944, with World War II still ongoing, representatives from 44 Allied nations gathered in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. They agreed to peg their currencies to the US dollar, which would itself be convertible to gold at $35 per ounce. The US, which held the majority of the world’s gold reserves at the time and had emerged from the war with its industrial base intact, became the anchor of the global monetary system.

In 1971, President Nixon ended dollar-gold convertibility—the “Nixon Shock.” The dollar was no longer technically backed by gold, but its dominance was already structural. International oil contracts were priced in dollars. Trade finance was conducted in dollars. Central banks held dollars as reserves because everyone else did, and that self-reinforcing logic made the dollar hard to displace.

Today, the dollar still accounts for around 57–58% of global foreign exchange reserves, per IMF COFER data as of early 2025. It’s used in an estimated 40–50% of global trade invoicing—far more than the US’s actual share of global trade. And most commodity markets, from crude oil to gold to copper, are priced in dollars by default.

That’s the baseline. It’s a formidable position. But formidable doesn’t mean permanent.

What de-dollarisation actually means 🌍

De-dollarisation is not a single event. It’s a slow-moving structural shift in how countries, central banks, and businesses choose to store value and conduct trade—and it’s been building for over a decade.

The clearest signal has been central bank gold buying. Since around 2022, central banks globally have been purchasing gold at the highest pace in decades, per World Gold Council data. China, India, Poland, Turkey, and several Gulf states have all added meaningfully to their gold reserves. The motive is explicit in many cases: reducing dependence on dollar-denominated assets that, in theory, could be frozen or sanctioned.

The freezing of Russian central bank assets in 2022—following the invasion of Ukraine—accelerated this thinking dramatically. Countries that previously treated US Treasury holdings as simply a risk-free savings account suddenly saw them as a geopolitical instrument that could be turned off. Whether or not you agree with the policy, the signal to non-aligned nations was clear.

Bilateral trade in non-dollar currencies has also grown. China and Russia now settle the large majority of their bilateral trade in yuan and rubles. India and Russia explored rupee-rouble trade settlement for oil purchases, with mixed results. China has been expanding yuan-denominated oil contracts, particularly with Gulf producers.

The BRICS expansion is part of the same story. The grouping—Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa —now expanded to include Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iran, Egypt, and Ethiopia—has explicitly discussed creating an alternative settlement mechanism. However, a formal BRICS currency remains distant and faces significant structural hurdles.

None of this means the dollar is about to be replaced. It doesn’t. But it does mean the dollar’s share of global reserves and trade finance has been declining at the margin—slowly, not sharply; IMF data adjusted for valuation effects show the USD share has been broadly stable in recent quarters, with the longer-run decline a gradual drift from the early 2000s rather than a 2020s leg down. The direction is real. The speed is slow.

Why the dollar is under pressure right now 📉

Structural de-dollarisation is a decade-long story. But the dollar’s more immediate weakness in 2025 has a few distinct near-term drivers worth separating.

Tariff-related uncertainty has done something counterintuitive: instead of strengthening the dollar as a haven—which is the typical pattern in times of global stress—the Liberation Day tariff shock weakened it. One explanation is that investors are pricing in damage to US economic growth and the credibility of US economic policy, per commentary from several major banks and financial news outlets. When confidence in the US as a reliable trade partner wobbles, so does confidence in its currency.

Fiscal trajectory is a slower-burn concern. The US is running structurally large budget deficits, and debt servicing costs have risen significantly as interest rates remain elevated. Investors who hold US Treasuries as the backbone of their reserve portfolio are watching the supply of dollar-denominated debt increase faster than natural demand can absorb it—which, at the margin, pushes yields up and the dollar’s appeal as a long-term store of value down.

Federal Reserve rate path matters too. If the Fed cuts rates more aggressively than other major central banks—such as the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan, and the Reserve Bank of India—the interest rate differential that attracts capital to dollar assets narrows. Lower relative rates mean lower relative demand for the currency.

The US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the dollar against a basket of major currencies, peaked in late 2022 and has traded below those highs since—but the move has been choppy rather than a clean downtrend, with the index rebounding toward the high-90s to around 100 by early 2026, per market data. The “weak dollar” story is real relative to the 2022 peak; it is not a straight-line decline.

What a weaker dollar does to markets 📊

Currency moves don’t stay in the currency market. They ripple through equities, commodities, and global capital flows in ways that matter to portfolio positioning.

Commodities rise in dollar terms. Since most commodities are priced in dollars, a weaker dollar means the same barrel of oil or ounce of gold costs more dollars to buy. Gold has been one of the standout performers in 2025, partly driven by this dynamic, on top of safe-haven demand amid geopolitical uncertainty. Energy and metals tend to benefit in dollar-weakening environments.

US multinationals see a translation tailwind. Companies that earn significant revenue outside the US—think large-cap tech, pharma, consumer staples—translate foreign earnings back into dollars when they report. A weaker dollar makes those foreign earnings worth more in the reported figures. This is one reason some analysts have argued the earnings impact of a weak dollar partially offsets the tariff headwinds for globally diversified US companies.

Emerging markets tend to benefit. A weaker dollar reduces the debt servicing burden for emerging market countries that borrowed in dollars. It also tends to push capital flows toward higher-yielding assets in developing economies, as the premium of sitting in dollar assets narrows. India, Brazil, and other emerging markets have historically outperformed during sustained dollar weakness cycles.

US domestic-focused companies face less tailwind. If a company earns and spends almost entirely in dollars, currency moves don’t help its earnings. The dollar weakness benefit is concentrated in globally exposed businesses.

What this means if you’re investing in US stocks from India 🇮🇳

Here’s where it gets personal for investors like you.

When you buy US stocks from India, you’re converting rupees to dollars at today’s exchange rate. When you eventually sell, you convert back. The dollar’s movement during that holding period is a return variable you’re taking on—whether you’ve thought about it explicitly or not.

A weaker dollar reduces your rupee-denominated returns, even if your USD returns are positive. If you hold a US stock that rises 10% in dollar terms, but the dollar falls 5% against the rupee during that period, your actual return in rupees is closer to 5%. Currency drag is real, and in a sustained dollar-weakening cycle, it meaningfully compresses what you actually take home.

Conversely, a strong dollar has been a quiet return booster over the past decade. Much of the outperformance that Indian investors in US equities experienced in the 2010s and early 2020s was amplified by a gradually weakening rupee and strengthening dollar. That tailwind is not guaranteed going forward.

What this argues for is diversification within your US exposure. Holding some allocation in commodities (gold ETFs, for instance), or in US companies with heavy international revenue, means you’re not entirely reliant on dollar strength to generate rupee-denominated returns. It doesn’t mean abandoning US equities—it means being thoughtful about the currency dimension as a deliberate variable rather than an afterthought.

The rupee’s own dynamics matter too. A weaker dollar often brings capital into India’s equity and bond markets as investors seek emerging-market yields. That can support the rupee and partially offset the impact of dollar weakness on Indian investors—but the timing and magnitude are never guaranteed.

You don’t need to make sweeping changes. But a few frameworks help.

Don’t confuse structural and cyclical. The structural story—BRICS expansion, central bank gold buying, bilateral non-dollar trade—plays out over decades. The cyclical story—DXY weakness in 2025 driven by tariff uncertainty and Fed rate expectations—plays out over months. They’re related but distinct. Don’t panic about the structural story showing up in your quarterly returns, and don’t extrapolate the cyclical story into a permanent regime shift.

For Indian investors in US markets, the practical implication isn’t to panic or abandon US equities. It’s to stop treating currency as a passive background variable and start thinking about it as an active component of your portfolio return. 📊 What ETF flows actually tell you

Let’s be clear about what we’re measuring: daily creation/redemption activity in Apple-heavy ETFs tells you whether institutional money is adding or reducing exposure. Retail investors buy shares on the secondary market — that doesn’t affect flows. Only when authorised participants create or redeem ETF units do we see actual demand signals.

Here’s the approximate directional picture in Apple-heavy ETFs over the five trading days since the McDonald’s beverage story broke (April 8–14, 2026):

What this actually means:

But VGT (tech-focused) is seeing outflows despite Apple being its largest holding. That’s a divergence. When the most concentrated tech fund sees outflows while broader indexes drift up, institutions are saying: “We’ll own Apple through the index, but we’re not making an active bet on tech.”

The semiconductor ETF outflow is the tell. The narrative drug: You already own Apple. Confirming evidence feels like validation. A headline linking two brands you recognise (McDonald’s + Apple) creates a false pattern. Your brain wants the story to matter because you’re already long.

The substitution error: Quick — Does Apple Pay increasing its share in QSR mobile payments move the stock? You don’t know, so your brain substitutes an easier question: “Is Apple Pay growing?” Yes = bullish = don’t think harder.

Here’s the reality check — this pattern has played out before:

Apple Pay penetration figures and revenue impact estimates for both McDonald’s and Starbucks are illustrative assumptions, not publicly reported data.

See the pattern? Payment integration stories rally the stock for 24–48 hours, then fundamentals reassert.

Why? Because at a valuation of approximately 28x forward earnings — with the Fed funds rate still sitting around 4.25% and money market funds yielding close to 4.8% risk-free — a ~$180M rounding-error payment story doesn’t move the needle on a $3 trillion company. Apple’s earnings yield is roughly 3.5% against a 10-year Treasury yield of around 4.18%. You are paying for growth. That growth needs to be real and re-accelerating — not driven by craft sodas.

Right now, in April 2026, recession risk is back on everyone’s lips. No official recession has been declared — reputable commentators are split between “soft landing” and “meaningful slowdown” camps — but tariff shocks have rattled global supply chains, consumer confidence is wobbling, and equity markets have sold off sharply in recent weeks. Whether or not a recession materialises, the warning signs are worth understanding now. Recessions rarely arrive without a trail — in bond markets, employment data, manufacturing surveys, and consumer spending patterns — for months before the economy officially tips over.

What exactly is a recession? 🤔

The textbook definition is deceptively simple: two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth. The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in the US — the official arbiter of recession dating — goes further, defining it as a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, visible in GDP, income, employment, industrial production, and retail sales.

But here’s what most people miss: by the time a recession is officially declared, it’s usually already been underway for months. If you could only watch one recession indicator for the rest of your investing life, most economists would point you to the yield curve — specifically, the spread between the 10-year US Treasury yield and the 2-year (or sometimes 3-month) Treasury yield.

Here’s the logic. Normally, long-term bonds pay higher interest than short-term ones — investors demand more compensation for locking up money for longer. Why does inversion matter?

The 10-year/2-year spread inverted meaningfully before each of the last several US recessions. It’s not perfect timing — the lag between inversion and recession onset can range from several months to well over a year — but as a directional warning sign, it has a strong track record.

What to watch: When the 10-year yield drops meaningfully below the 2-year, pay attention. When the curve starts to “uninvert” (spreads start widening again), that can paradoxically be when recession risk is at its highest — banks are pricing in rate cuts because things are already deteriorating.

The digital-asset market has matured just enough for serious payment networks to care, but not enough for them to take reckless balance-sheet risk.

Mastercard’s 2025 annual report clearly lays out that approach. It says the company is expanding support for blockchain-based payment models through a “controlled and risk-managed framework” with due diligence and monitoring standards for partners in the digital-asset ecosystem. Meanwhile, the broader crypto ecosystem is still volatile. Bitcoin has been trading in the high-$60,000 range in early April 2026, while Coinbase’s latest reported quarter showed how exposed the industry still is to market swings: in Q1 2025, Coinbase said total crypto market cap fell about 19% quarter over quarter. Its spot trading volume declined about 10% quarter over quarter.

So the backdrop is mixed: real utility is improving, but price-led cyclicality is still very much alive.

2. It is building both consumer and merchant use cases.

Mastercard’s April 2025 announcement spelt out the playbook: consumers can spend stablecoins through partner wallets and cards, while merchants can opt to receive settlement in stablecoins through partners like Nuvei and Circle.

3. It wants programmable money flows, not just card swipes.

Through the Mastercard Multi-Token Network, the company is pushing into B2B and tokenised settlement use cases. Mastercard said partners, including JPMorgan Chase and Standard Chartered, were connected to that network for emerging digital-asset applications.
