Three regional Fed presidents dissented in favour of raising rates, the most hawkish revolt at a Fed meeting since 2016, even as the central bank held steady. Bond markets didn’t take it well. The 30-year Treasury yield pushed to its highest level since 2007, and the Dow shed over 1,150 points in a single session, its worst day in more than a year. Layer in a fresh escalation in the Iran war, a soft GDP print, and a Microsoft-versus-Meta split screen on AI spending, and you have one of the more consequential weeks of 2026.

Monday opened with markets digesting a weekend pause in the US-Iran conflict. The Dow added a modest 262.83 points (0.51%) to close at 52,210.08, while the S&P 500 barely moved, up just 0.02% to 7,413.18, per CNBC. The Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.18% to 24,932.08, weighed down by a roughly 5% drop in Nvidia as chip stocks broadly sold off even as they trimmed steeper early losses. Chinese chipmaker CXMT’s blockbuster Shanghai IPO briefly lifted the space before investors rotated back out, and capital instead found its way into crypto-linked names.

Tuesday brought the week’s clearest theme: a rotation out of semiconductors and into old-economy earnings winners. The Dow jumped 537.24 points (1.03%) to 52,747.32, its third straight winning day, powered by Sherwin-Williams (+8.3% on an earnings beat and raised guidance) and Coca-Cola (+5.3% to fresh record highs on a beat-and-raise quarter), per Benzinga and CNBC. The S&P 500 added a modest 0.21% to 7,428.78, but the Nasdaq dipped 0.22% to 24,876.91 as the memory-chip complex cratered. SanDisk, 2026’s best-performing S&P 500 stock heading into the month, is now down more than 50% from its peak, with Micron, Western Digital, Seagate, and peers all sliding as investors reassessed the sector following CXMT’s debut and the Fed’s approaching decision. Also on Tuesday: Apple briefly touched a $5 trillion market capitalisation, a day after overtaking Nvidia as the world’s most valuable company, per CNBC and Yahoo Finance.

Wednesday was the week’s defining session. The Federal Reserve held its benchmark rate at 3.5%-3.75% for a fifth straight meeting, but the 9-3 vote included dissents from Cleveland’s Beth Hammack, Minneapolis’s Neel Kashkari, and Dallas’s Lorie Logan, all of whom wanted a quarter-point hike, per CNN and CNBC. Warsh called it a “good family fight” and stressed there is “no soft inflation target,” a hawkish tilt that spooked a bond market already unsettled by a fresh escalation in the Iran war (Iran reportedly launched a ballistic missile attack on US forces, per CNBC). Oil jumped on the news, with Brent up 6.6% to $89.61 and WTI up 6.4% to $84.31. The Dow tumbled 1,153.18 points (2.19%) to 51,594.14, its worst day since April 2025. The S&P 500 fell 1.52% to 7,316.15, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.74% to 24,442.94, briefly entering correction territory (more than 10% below its all-time high). The 10-year Treasury yield rose 7 basis points to above 4.67%, while the 30-year jumped 10 basis points to above 5.2%, its highest since 2007. After the close, Microsoft and Meta reported: Microsoft’s Azure business topped $100 billion in annual revenue for the first time and the stock surged, while Meta’s free cash flow fell roughly 91% on ballooning AI capex and the stock slid.

Thursday saw futures stage a sharp rebound as Microsoft jumped as much as 9% in premarket trading and semiconductors bounced alongside it, while Meta fell roughly 9% on a soft revenue forecast, per CNBC and Yahoo Finance. The morning brought a data-heavy release: Q2 GDP grew just 1.5% (against a 1.8% consensus), decelerating from Q1’s 2.1% pace, while June’s PCE inflation gauge came in broadly in line, up 0.1% month-on-month with core PCE holding at 3.7% and 3.3% year-on-year respectively. Fresh overnight US strikes on Iranian targets kept geopolitical risk elevated even as oil held roughly steady. Apple and Amazon were both due to report after Thursday’s close, alongside Mastercard, Shell, and Bristol-Myers Squibb, setting up one more data point for Friday’s open.

Friday carries the weight of Thursday night’s Apple and Amazon results, the Bank of England’s rate decision, and whatever the bond market makes of a week that saw the Fed hold, dissent hard, and watch the 30-year yield hit an 18-year high anyway.

😶‍🌫️ Sentiment watch

The CNN Fear & Greed Index sat at 37, in Fear territory, as of Wednesday’s close, having drifted down over the course of the week as the Fed decision and Iran escalation weighed on risk appetite. The VIX told the same story more sharply: it closed Wednesday at roughly 20.7, up more than 13% on the day from a prior close near 18.2, a level that reflects real hedging demand without yet being a crisis reading.

That combination, fear without panic, is consistent with a market that respects the uncertainty Warsh has deliberately introduced but hasn’t concluded the worst case is coming. The Fed’s own decision to strip out forward guidance means investors have fewer signals to lean on between meetings than they’re used to, and that alone appears to be adding a volatility premium.

Apple touched a $5 trillion market cap in intraday trading on 28 July 2026, becoming only the second listed company after Nvidia to get there. It got there while spending a reported $14 billion on capital expenditure for the year, against roughly $205 billion at Alphabet, according to consensus estimates cited by TipRanks. The stock is up close to 24% in 2026, the best performance of any Magnificent Seven name; at the same time, Microsoft has shed nearly a fifth of its value, fretting over the returns on its own AI spending. Most retail investors still frame Apple as the company playing catch-up on artificial intelligence, licensing Google’s Gemini because it couldn’t build a frontier model of its own in time. The market has started framing it differently: as the one large technology company that worked out how to profit from the AI cycle without funding the infrastructure war underneath it. Both readings are true at once, and reconciling them is the whole story this quarter.

The timing compounds the intrigue. Cook’s Thursday call, covering fiscal third-quarter 2026 results for the quarter ended in late June, is his last as chief executive after 15 years in the job. John Ternus, Apple’s hardware engineering chief for the past several years, takes the title on September 1, becomes a board member, and inherits a company at its most valuable moment in history. He has already made his first significant call from the CEO’s chair, and it involved killing one of Cook’s own strategic bets. What Apple actually does next matters more than what any single earnings print says about it.

📱 What Apple actually does today

The Wikipedia version says Apple sells iPhones. The accurate version is that Apple runs a five-line business built to keep a 2.5 billion-plus device installed base paying it every year, with the iPhone as the entry point rather than the whole story.

iPhone remains the anchor, at 51% of revenue in the most recently reported quarter, per Apple’s own segment disclosure. But the growth underneath it has shifted character. Fiscal Q2 2026 iPhone revenue hit $57.0 billion, up 22% year over year and a March-quarter record, driven by the iPhone 17 family and genuine supply constraints on system-on-chip components, not just marketing push, according to Apple’s earnings release and Tim Cook’s remarks on the call. Services, at 28% of the mix, is the business that actually explains Apple’s valuation: the App Store, Apple Music, Apple TV+, iCloud, Apple Pay, AppleCare and advertising together posted an all-time high of $31.0 billion in the same quarter, up roughly 16%, at gross margins in the mid-70s versus the high-30s to low-40s that hardware carries.

Mac, iPad, and Wearables round out the picture at single-digit-billion quarterly scale each, useful less for their own growth than for widening the surface area of devices that Services can be sold into. India has become a structural piece of this too, not just a growth market for iPhones but a manufacturing base: Tata Electronics and Foxconn now run five assembly plants between them, and India’s share of global iPhone assembly is projected to reach roughly a quarter to 28% of the total in 2026, according to Counterpoint Research estimates, up from about 18 to 20% two years earlier. That shift is doing double duty, hedging Apple’s China concentration while giving it a tariff-advantaged export base for the US market.

On June 30, 2026, at a central banking conference in Sintra, Portugal, the chair of the Federal Reserve stood up and said something that used to go without saying. Kevin Warsh told the room that if businesses and households expected the Fed to tolerate inflation above 2%, they’d be disappointed, and that the Fed had been independent of politics for a very long time and intended to stay that way. A sitting Fed chair having to state this out loud, at an international forum, is itself the story worth paying attention to.

For most of the Fed’s history, its independence from the White House was assumed rather than argued for. It was priced into every bond, every dollar, every rate decision, without anyone needing to say it. That assumption came under direct, sustained pressure over the past year, in a way that has no precedent in the Fed’s 112-year history. And once a market stops assuming something, it starts pricing it. That’s exactly what has been showing up in gold, in long-term Treasury yields, and in the rupee you convert every time you fund or withdraw from a US brokerage account.

🏛️ Why the Fed’s independence is suddenly a market question

The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 built a specific kind of insulation into the American central bank. Governors serve 14-year terms, staggered so that no single president can appoint a majority of the board in one term. The chair serves a renewable four-year term. Governors can be removed only “for cause”, understood for over a century to mean serious misconduct, not disagreement over interest rate policy. No president had ever attempted to remove a sitting governor mid-term, until 2025.

The reasoning behind this design is straightforward once you see it. Elected officials face an obvious short-term incentive to keep money loose and rates low, especially heading into an election, because looser policy feels good in the near term even when it stores up inflation for later. Central bank independence exists specifically to take that incentive out of the room.

The clearest historical case of what happens when it doesn’t stay out of the room is Richard Nixon and Fed chair Arthur Burns. Nixon spent much of 1971 pressuring Burns, a friend and his own appointee, to loosen policy ahead of the 1972 election. Burns held out for a time, then shifted toward expansionary policy that autumn. Nixon won a landslide re-election in November 1972. Wage and price controls temporarily held inflation near 3.3% through 1972, but the underlying pressure didn’t disappear, it deferred. Inflation climbed through the rest of the decade and into double digits by the late 1970s. Breaking it took Paul Volcker pushing the federal funds rate above 19% in the early 1980s, and a deliberately induced recession that lasted years. Nothing about the Nixon-Burns episode looked like a crisis in real time. The bill simply arrived later, and it was large.

The current episode has moved much faster, and through a different mechanism. In August 2025, President Trump moved to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, citing mortgage fraud allegations from before her 2022 appointment that she has denied and has not been charged with. Cook sued, arguing the president lacks the authority to remove a governor without cause, and a federal court blocked her removal while the case proceeded. In June 2026, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that Trump could not remove Cook for now, though it stopped short of deciding whether a president ultimately has that power at all. The case continues.

In January 2026, separate reporting of an investigation touching then-Fed chair Jerome Powell rattled markets within hours, gold and silver jumped, and Nasdaq futures fell on fears of what commentators called a direct assault on Fed independence. Later that month, Trump nominated Kevin Warsh, a Fed governor from 2006 to 2011, to succeed Powell as chair. Warsh took office on May 22, 2026. His first FOMC meeting, held June 17-18, left rates unchanged at 3.50% to 3.75%, but the accompanying projections were hawkish: the median year-end 2026 rate forecast rose to 3.8%, up from 3.4% in March, with nine of the eighteen officials now projecting at least one hike this year rather than a cut. His Sintra remarks a fortnight later effectively ruled out the near-term cuts the White House has been requesting.

All of this is unfolding against a backdrop where the inflation data gives Warsh genuine cover to stay hawkish. May’s CPI came in at 4.2% year on year, a three-year high, with core PCE running at 3.4%, both well above the Fed’s 2% target. June payrolls added a modest 57,000 jobs, with unemployment ticking down to 4.2%. The Fed’s July 28-29 meeting, the one concluding as this goes out, was widely expected to hold rates steady, though markets had priced in roughly a one-in-three chance of a hike at this meeting and close to four-in-five odds of one by September.

⚙️ How markets actually price a political risk premium into interest rates

Pricing in a hawkish surprise or a soft jobs report is routine. What’s happening now is different in kind: markets are pricing the possibility that the entire process generating future rate decisions has become less anchored to economic data alone, and they are doing it before anyone knows how the Lisa Cook case, or the broader standoff, actually resolves.

The clearest channel is the term premium, the extra compensation bond investors demand for holding a long-dated Treasury instead of rolling over short-term paper. A 10-year Treasury yield is really two things stacked together: the market’s expectation of where short-term rates will average over the next decade, and this separate term premium for the risk that things don’t go as expected. For most of the 2010s, that term premium sat near zero, sometimes even negative, because investors trusted the Fed’s process enough that they didn’t feel they needed extra compensation for the uncertainty. It has been rising since 2022, and spiked above 0.8% in January 2025, its highest level since 2011, according to the New York Fed’s own term premium model, driven by fiscal and political uncertainty rather than a change in the Fed’s actual policy stance. The 10-year yield itself climbed to around 4.6-4.7% through late July 2026, its highest since January 2025, with tariff and Middle East oil concerns doing some of that work alongside the independence question.

Gold is the second channel, and here the story is unusually explicit. Gold has always responded to real interest rates and inflation expectations, but strategists at Goldman Sachs and elsewhere have gone further this cycle, tying part of the rally directly to Fed independence risk and arguing that even a small shift in demand away from Treasuries and toward gold, as insurance against policy error, could push prices meaningfully higher from here. Gold set an all-time high above $5,500 an ounce in late January 2026, spiking within hours of the Powell investigation reports, before easing back to the $4,000-4,100 range by late July, still up more than 20% year on year. That pattern, a sharp jump on independence-related headlines rather than on growth or inflation surprises, is the signature of a political risk premium rather than an ordinary inflation hedge.

The dollar is the messier third channel, and worth being honest about rather than tidying up. A currency that’s supposed to be the world’s ultimate safe haven doesn’t move in one clean direction just because investors start doubting the institution that manages it. Through parts of 2026 the dollar weakened on Fed-cut expectations and independence jitters together. At other points, hawkish repricing and oil-driven inflation fears from Middle East tensions pushed it back up, with the Dollar Index spending most of the year in the high-90s to low-100s range. Fed independence risk is one force acting on the dollar. It is not the only one, and cyclical or geopolitical forces can dominate it over any given month.

Turkey offers the sharpest contrast to the slow-burn Nixon-Burns story, and shows what the fast version of this problem looks like. President Erdogan fired four central bank governors between 2019 and 2021 over disagreements about interest rates. The most consequential firing was Naci Agbal, who stabilised the lira with aggressive hikes through late 2020 only to be dismissed in March 2021 for doing exactly that. The rate cuts that followed sent the lira into open crisis: it lost close to 30% against the dollar in November 2021 alone, and roughly 40% over two months, while inflation climbed past 20% on its way to far higher levels later. Restoring any credibility required Turkey’s central bank to raise its policy rate all the way to 42.5% by December 2022, a far more painful path than simply never firing Agbal in the first place would have been.

Neither case says the United States is anywhere near Turkey’s outcome. What both cases show, at opposite speeds, is the same underlying mechanism: once a market concludes that a central bank’s decisions might be political rather than purely economic, it doesn’t wait for proof. It reprices immediately, in yields, in gold, in the currency, and the cost of later proving that independence actually held tends to run far higher than the cost of never putting it in doubt.

🏆 Who benefits and who’s exposed if the independence question stays live

Not every asset class reacts to this story the same way, and some of the instinctive plays deserve a second look before you make them.

Gold sits at the centre of the trade for a specific reason beyond the usual inflation-hedge logic: it is one of the few assets that gains directly from doubts about the institution managing the currency itself, rather than from the ordinary business cycle. Inflation-protected Treasuries capture a related but distinct idea, since their payouts adjust for realised inflation in a way nominal bonds can’t, though they still carry duration risk if real yields move against you. Bitcoin and similar assets get framed by some strategists as a hedge against the same institutional risk, though the comparison to gold’s centuries of central bank demand and lower volatility only goes so far.

On the other side, long-duration nominal Treasuries carry the most direct exposure, since a rising term premium is effectively the bond market demanding a discount for uncertainty that has nothing to do with growth or inflation forecasts. High-multiple growth stocks and debt-financed AI infrastructure spending sit close behind, because a higher discount rate compresses the value of earnings that are years away and raises the cost of the capex those companies are committing to. Regional banks face a subtler version of the same problem: planning around funding costs gets harder when the future path of rates is less predictable for reasons unrelated to the economy they actually lend into.

🇮🇳 What this means if you’re an Indian investor holding US assets

The rupee is the most direct line from this story to your portfolio. It has weakened to levels near 96-97 to the dollar through July 2026, among the weakest on record, with the Reserve Bank of India intervening through state-run banks and dollar-mobilisation measures that have drawn in roughly $32 billion. A meaningful share of that pressure is coming from oil, given the Iran-related tensions around the Strait of Hormuz covered elsewhere in this newsletter. Fed independence risk adds a second, more structural layer underneath the oil story: every swing in how confident markets are about the Fed’s process shows up as added volatility in the exchange rate you convert through the moment you fund or withdraw from a US brokerage account.

If you hold any US Treasury exposure as the defensive sleeve of a US portfolio, it’s worth understanding why yields are elevated rather than just noting that they are. A term premium rising because of political uncertainty behaves differently from one rising because the Fed is genuinely fighting inflation, and it can persist even if growth slows, which changes how reliably that sleeve actually protects you in a downturn.

Gold ETFs accessible through platforms like Winvesta sit at the direct centre of this specific story, not as a generic defensive afterthought but as a position that responds to headlines about Fed governance the way it once mainly responded to recession fears or dollar cycles. That’s a different rationale from the de-dollarisation and stagflation framing covered in earlier editions of this newsletter, even though the asset is the same.

On the equity side, the AI capex names covered in an earlier edition carry a direct link here too. Businesses committing hundreds of billions to debt-financed infrastructure are more exposed to a persistently elevated term premium than businesses funding growth out of existing cash flow, regardless of how strong the underlying AI demand story is.

None of this argues for exiting US equities or abandoning dollar assets. It argues for treating Fed independence risk as its own distinct line item in how you think about currency exposure, bond duration, and gold allocation, separate from the ordinary cyclical calls on growth and inflation that this newsletter usually covers.

🧭 The signals that tell you whether this resolves or escalates

A handful of concrete developments will tell you more than the daily headline noise.

The Lisa Cook case remains the clearest legal signal. The Supreme Court’s June 2026 ruling kept her in her seat while the underlying question, whether a president can remove a Fed governor without cause, stays unresolved. A final ruling either way will matter more to the credibility of the institution than any single rate decision.

Each subsequent FOMC dot plot is worth reading for direction rather than the headline rate decision alone. Further hawkish drift, more officials projecting hikes rather than cuts even as growth cools, would suggest the committee is leaning into independence over accommodation. A sudden dovish reversal without a clear data justification would raise the opposite question.

Kevin Warsh’s public communications are a genuine leading indicator. Continued independence-asserting language in the mould of the Sintra remarks signals the institution is holding its ground. Any visible softening under pressure would be a meaningfully different signal.

The 10-year term premium itself, published by the New York Fed and freely trackable, is the cleanest quantitative gauge. A further rise with no corresponding change in growth or inflation data is close to a direct read of political risk pricing, separate from the economic cycle.

Gold’s relationship with real yields is worth watching for the same reason. Gold typically falls when real yields rise, since it pays no yield of its own. If gold keeps climbing even as real yields rise, that divergence is one of the more reliable tells that the political risk premium, not the ordinary inflation hedge, is doing the work.

Any further personnel moves, new board nominations, additional legal challenges to sitting governors, or proposals to alter the Fed’s structure, would be the next concrete escalation to track, well ahead of what shows up in the inflation data itself.

The practical takeaway isn’t to predict how the Cook case or the broader standoff resolves. It’s to recognise that a meaningful part of what’s currently showing up in long-term yields and in gold has nothing to do with the ordinary economic cycle this newsletter usually walks through, and to size your currency, bond duration, and gold positioning with that distinction in mind rather than folding it into the same bucket as a normal hawkish or dovish surprise.

Most investors see one AI trade. Buy Nasdaq. Buy the Magnificent Seven. Ride the wave. But the data this earnings season tells a different story. The AI trade split into two trades sometime this year, and the market has been pricing them in opposite directions ever since. Alphabet lost roughly seven percent of its value in a single session last week for spending more on AI, not less. Over the same stretch, the group of companies that actually sells the picks and shovels for that spending, the semiconductor sector, has been one of the best performing corners of the market all year. Microsoft and Meta report Wednesday. Apple and Amazon report Thursday. If you own a Nasdaq-100 fund and think you’re diversified across technology, this week is when you find out how much of that fund is still riding one side of a trade that already broke in half.

🎯 Meet Karan

Karan, 34, is a data analyst at a fintech in Bangalore. He built his US portfolio the way a lot of Winvesta users do, one ETF at a time, over about three years, without ever sitting down to map how the pieces overlap.

His ₹35 lakh US allocation breaks down like this: roughly ₹14 lakh in QQQ, bought early as his “broad technology” bet. About ₹4 lakh in MAGS, added last year after reading about the Magnificent Seven as a concentrated way to own the AI leaders directly. Around ₹3 lakh in SMH, added on a colleague’s suggestion earlier this year and never topped up. The rest, close to ₹14 lakh, sits in cash waiting to be deployed.

Here’s what Karan thinks he owns: a broad technology fund, a concentrated bet on the seven biggest AI winners, and a small semiconductor position for good measure. Here’s what he actually owns.

QQQ’s top holdings have, for well over a year, been dominated by the same handful of mega-cap names that make up the entire Magnificent Seven basket, together typically accounting for close to half the fund’s weight, per Invesco’s own published breakdown of the index. MAGS is those same seven companies again, just repackaged as an equal-weighted basket. Add the two together and Karan’s “diversified technology allocation” and his “concentrated AI bet” are, for practical purposes, the same trade, sized at somewhere near ₹10-11 lakh, or close to a third of his entire US portfolio.

His SMH position, the one holding that has actually behaved differently from the Magnificent Seven this year, the one riding the other half of the AI trade, is worth less than a third of that. Karan built a portfolio that feels spread out. It is, in practice, one large bet on seven companies reporting earnings this week, and one small bet on everyone selling them the hardware.

📊 What’s actually inside QQQ, MAGS and SMH

QQQ tracks the Nasdaq-100, and its top ten holdings are still overwhelmingly the same AI infrastructure spenders that make headlines every earnings season: Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Meta, Alphabet, alongside Nvidia and Broadcom on the supply side. MAGS strips that overlap out and hands you the seven mega-caps directly, equal-weighted, with no smaller Nasdaq names to dilute the concentration. SMH sits on the other side of the ledger entirely: chip designers, fabrication equipment makers and memory producers, the companies getting paid by the hyperscalers rather than the ones doing the paying.

That distinction has mattered more this year than in any recent one. Semiconductor funds have posted some of the strongest returns in the market for 2026 so far, while the Magnificent Seven basket has struggled to stay positive, a divergence institutional strategists have been flagging since at least mid-year.

Here’s the illustrative flow picture across these three funds over the past week and the past several months.

Read that pattern carefully. Money has been rotating out of the concentrated mega-cap trade and into the picks-and-shovels trade for months, not days. That’s not a one-week panic. It’s a structural repricing of who gets credit for the AI build-out: the companies building the infrastructure, or the companies selling them the parts.

The following scenarios, probabilities and return estimates are an illustrative editorial model built on assumed outcomes, not a forecast, market consensus or a guarantee of anything.

Scenario 1: Earnings reassure the market (30% probability)

Microsoft’s Azure growth clears the roughly 36 to 40 percent bar the Street is watching for, Meta’s ad growth absorbs its higher capex without denting margins, and Amazon shows AWS acceleration alongside disciplined spending. The market decides, for now, that the capex is converting into revenue. QQQ and MAGS recover part of last week’s losses, and SMH keeps climbing on continued demand for the hardware underneath all of it.

Illustrative portfolio impact: QQQ ₹14L becomes ₹14.84L (+6%). MAGS ₹4L becomes ₹4.32L (+8%). SMH ₹3L becomes ₹3.15L (+5%). Cash stays at ₹14L. Illustrative total: ₹36.31L, or roughly +3.7% on the full portfolio.

One or more of this week’s reports raises capex guidance again, the way Alphabet just did, and the market’s patience runs out, not just for the spenders but for the theme as a whole. Profit-taking spreads into the semiconductor names too, on the logic that if the buyers of AI infrastructure are struggling to justify the spend, the sellers of that infrastructure face demand risk of their own eventually.

Illustrative portfolio impact: QQQ ₹14L becomes ₹12.60L (-10%). MAGS ₹4L becomes ₹3.44L (-14%). SMH ₹3L becomes ₹2.64L (-12%). Cash stays at ₹14L. Illustrative total: ₹32.68L, or roughly -6.6%.

Expected value contribution: -6.6% × 25% ≈ -1.65%

Putting it together: +1.11% + (-0.18%) + (-1.65%) ≈ -0.72% illustrative expected return across the four trading days that matter most this week. Karan’s current allocation carries a mildly negative probability-weighted outcome under this framework, mostly because his real exposure to Wednesday and Thursday’s earnings is roughly three times the size of the position that’s actually been working this year. This is a framework for thinking about concentration, not a prediction of what happens on the day.

Most investors are carrying one of two Intel stories: the dying x86 chipmaker losing ground to AMD and Arm, or the government-backed momentum trade that has more than doubled this year. Neither describes what the second-quarter numbers actually said. Revenue came in at $16.1 billion, up 25% year on year, the fastest growth rate for any quarter since 2011, per CNBC. Data Center and AI revenue grew 59%. Non-GAAP earnings came in at double what analysts expected, and third-quarter guidance landed well above consensus. Then the stock fell almost 8% the following day. The argument on Wall Street is no longer about whether Intel can make competitive chips. It is about whether Intel can afford to build the factories to make them.

🧩 Not one company, but four

Intel reports as a small number of segments, and the headline revenue figure flattens businesses with completely different economics into one number. Reading them separately is where the quarter gets interesting.

Client Computing and Physical AI, the PC business plus the newer edge and robotics silicon, generated $8.9 billion in Q2, up 13% year on year, with operating income of $2.3 billion, per Intel’s earnings release. This is the cash engine, not the growth story. Management flagged on the earnings call that the second half of 2026 will likely be subseasonal for PCs, because surging memory prices are pushing up the bill of materials for every notebook maker. Intel is deliberately shifting production capacity away from client and toward servers, where the shortage is more acute and the margins are better.

Data Center and AI is the segment that reset expectations. Revenue reached $6.3 billion, up 59% year on year, with operating income of $2.5 billion, which works out to an operating margin close to 40%. A year ago this segment earned $633 million on $3.9 billion of revenue. That is the difference between a business selling commodity server CPUs into a flat market and one selling into a compute shortage. Management said AI-driven businesses collectively grew more than 70% year on year.

Intel Foundry, the contract manufacturing arm, brought in $5.8 billion, up 31%, most of it from making Intel’s own chips. It lost $2.1 billion at the operating line, though that loss narrowed by $348 million from the prior quarter. External foundry revenue, the number that actually matters here, was $293 million, up from $174 million the quarter before. Real progress, and still under 2% of company revenue.

All other, which includes Mobileye and the mask operations business, contributed $0.7 billion, down 33% year on year, largely because Altera was deconsolidated in September 2025.

The shape of this is a products company that has become genuinely profitable again, attached to a manufacturing business that is still losing roughly $8 billion a year on an annualised basis and needs outside customers to stop doing so.

🏭 The foundry bet that actually has to work

Everything in the Intel thesis funnels into one question: does 14A land, and does anyone outside Intel commit to it?

Here is the state of play. Intel 18A, the node the company bet its credibility on, is working better than management guided. CFO David Zinsner said on the call that 18A output ran roughly 25% above target in the quarter and more than 50% higher sequentially. Intel 18A-P entered risk production on the timeline shared with customers a year ago. Panther Lake, the Core Ultra Series 3 family, is in high-volume manufacturing using ASML’s High NA EUV tooling, and Xeon 6+ became Intel’s first server-class product built on 18A.

Intel 14A is where the commercial case sits. On the call, CEO Lip-Bu Tan said defect density and transistor performance are running ahead of schedule, that PDK 0.5 is complete, and that PDK 0.9, the design kit external customers need before they can commit silicon, remains on track for October 2026. Risk production is targeted for the second half of 2027, and Intel made the decision during Q2 to fully commit to a high-volume ramp in 2028. Tan’s framing was that customers get serious once they can see the design kit and the yield data for themselves.

Then there is Fortinet. On 21 July, two days before earnings, Intel announced that Fortinet would build its next-generation Security Processor 6 at Intel’s Fab 34 in Leixlip, Ireland, on the Intel 4 process, with Intel handling design, packaging and manufacturing. The stock rose about 8.6% that day to close at $105.45, per market data. This is the first external foundry customer Intel has been willing to name since Tan took over in March 2025, and Fortinet’s previous generation chip was made by TSMC, so it is a competitive win rather than a courtesy announcement.

It is also not the win Intel keeps promising. Intel 4 is an older node that has been reserved for Intel’s own products, and neither company disclosed the dollar value. In an April filing, Intel acknowledged it was still trying to secure a significant customer for its most advanced process technology. That sentence has not changed.

What did change is the spending. Zinsner raised 2026 capital expenditure guidance to more than $20 billion from roughly $18 billion, said tooling spend alone is up around 40% versus 2025, and said 2027 capex will be significantly above 2026, with the vast majority of it inside the US network. He also said Intel is aggressively locking in tool purchase orders and accelerating clean room build-outs. On the call he noted that CHIPS Act investment tax credits return roughly 35 cents on the dollar for qualifying US investment, which softens the gross number considerably.

The most underappreciated detail of the quarter: memory, not wafers, is now the binding constraint. Tan said memory is the big supply constraint challenge, that Intel is working with all three large memory vendors, and that the company is looking at how to integrate compute and memory more efficiently. Intel also hired Seok-hee Lee, formerly chief executive of SK hynix, to run advanced packaging. A company that spent a decade being outmanoeuvred on manufacturing has just hired one of the most experienced memory operators in the industry to sit inside its packaging organisation.

Wall Street spent this week holding two contradictory truths at once. On one hand, second quarter earnings are running at more than 20% year-on-year growth, among the strongest prints in years, and chip stocks staged a violent comeback after last week’s worst weekly drop since April 2025. On the other, an eleven-night bombing campaign against Iran pushed oil to five-week highs, Washington opened a new tariff front against Canada, and Alphabet and Tesla both got punished this week, not for weak results, but for how much they’re now promising to spend. The CNN Fear and Greed Index stayed in Fear territory throughout, a reminder that this market’s nerves are about geopolitics and capex discipline, not about the underlying business.

📊 Market recap

Monday opened under pressure as the fragile Iran ceasefire kept fraying over the weekend, with fresh tit-for-tat strikes pushing oil toward $90 a barrel. The S&P 500 slipped 0.19% to close at 7,443.28, the Nasdaq eased 0.05% to 25,508.07, and the Dow fell 307 points, or 0.59%, to 51,839.26, dragged lower in part by a more than 2% decline in Apple, per CNBC. Chip stocks tried to claw back some of the prior week’s steep losses, but the broader tape stayed cautious as reports emerged of Iranian mobilisation and a Houthi threat to blockade Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea exports.

Tuesday reversed the mood entirely. Investors chose to look through the Iran headlines and focus on corporate earnings, and semiconductors led a broad rally: the Dow gained 385 points (0.74%) to 52,224.64, the S&P 500 rose 0.89% to 7,509.20, and the Nasdaq jumped 1.29% to 25,837.21, per CNBC. Western Digital surged roughly 12.5% and Intel gained around 8.6% as the chip complex staged its sharpest comeback in weeks, while Micron also rallied hard on the same rebound. General Motors beat second quarter expectations, and Nvidia disclosed a stake in Nebius. Trump’s fresh 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods barely registered, with investors choosing to shrug it off as unlikely to move the needle near-term.

Wednesday brought the week’s real test: a parade of megacap earnings against a backdrop of climbing oil. The S&P 500 dipped 0.14% to 7,498.96, the Nasdaq slipped 0.57% to 25,690.90, and the Dow was essentially flat, down just 6 points to 52,218.58, per CNBC. Brent crude jumped about 3.4% to settle at $94.07 a barrel, its highest level in more than a month, after the US carried out its eleventh consecutive night of strikes on Iran; Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Iran is “not serious about talks.” After the close, Alphabet and Tesla delivered the two most consequential reports of the week. Alphabet beat on revenue, with cloud sales up sharply, but raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to a $195-205 billion range (from roughly $190 billion) and posted negative free cash flow; shares fell in after-hours trade. Tesla’s revenue rose but adjusted EPS came in well below Wall Street’s estimate and free cash flow turned negative, with CEO Elon Musk framing 2026 as a “massive capex year” for Optimus, robotaxis, and data centres. ServiceNow, which had slumped in sympathy with IBM’s spending warning earlier in the week, beat its own numbers and raised guidance, and shares jumped roughly 7% after hours.

Thursday’s session opened under renewed pressure as the market digested Wednesday night’s earnings. Alphabet fell as much as 4.5% and Tesla around 5.9% to 6% in premarket and early trade, dragging Nasdaq futures lower, per CNBC and Bloomberg. Oil extended its climb, with Brent touching $98 and WTI above $90, its highest since early June, as Trump signalled the strikes on Iran would continue. Texas Instruments, despite beating estimates, fell around 3.2%, while Lockheed Martin jumped roughly 6% premarket on a strong beat and raised guidance, one of the few pockets of green in an otherwise defensive tape. Intel was due to report its own second quarter results after Thursday’s close, with options markets pricing in a swing of 12-15% either way, making it the week’s final and arguably most important data point heading into the weekend.

😶‍🌫️ Sentiment watch

The CNN Fear and Greed Index spent the entire week in Fear territory, dipping to roughly 37.6 on Monday as oil and Iran headlines weighed on the tape, before edging up to around 43 by midweek as earnings beats offered some reassurance, per Benzinga and MacroMicro data. The VIX stayed contained through it all, around 18.6 on Monday and settling closer to the high teens by Wednesday, per Yahoo Finance. That combination, genuine Fear-zone sentiment with a volatility gauge that never really panicked, tells you this is a market that’s nervous but not capitulating. Investors know exactly what’s worrying them: oil, capex, and the Fed. They just haven’t decided it’s bad enough to sell in size yet.

🏆 Best performers

The week’s winners had almost nothing to do with the macro story. Super Micro’s record backlog, Lockheed’s guidance raise, and the semiconductor sector’s Tuesday rebound were all company or sector-specific stories that briefly overpowered the Iran and tariff headlines. ServiceNow’s after-hours pop was the most symbolic: a company that had been left for dead after IBM’s spending warning earlier in the week came back with a beat-and-raise that reminded investors the AI budget fears may be more IBM-specific than industry-wide.

💔 Worst performers

The losers list tells the more important story of the week. Alphabet and Tesla weren’t punished for missing, Alphabet actually beat, they were punished for spending more than investors wanted to see, right as free cash flow at both companies turned negative or came close to it. That’s a different kind of correction than an earnings miss, and it’s the one worth watching heading into Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon’s reports next week.

Most investors still picture Blackstone as a private equity shop, leveraged buyouts, and corporate raiders in expensive suits, the Barbarians at the Gate model updated for the 2020s. Private equity today accounts for barely a third of the $1.3 trillion Blackstone now manages. The rest sits in real estate, credit and insurance capital, and a smaller multi-asset business, most of it earning management fees whether the underlying investments go up, down, or sideways. Within that machine, one theme now shows up in eight of the ten best-performing investments Blackstone made last quarter, according to president and COO Jon Gray: data centers, power generation, and the physical infrastructure the AI economy runs on. Blackstone has become one of the largest single financiers of the AI buildout on the planet, and a fair number of retail investors are still valuing the stock like it is a 2015-vintage buyout fund.

Blackstone reports second-quarter 2026 results on Thursday, July 23, before the opening bell, the same day this piece publishes. Everything below on Q2 is clearly marked as a consensus estimate, not a reported number. The most recent confirmed results are for the first quarter of 2026, reported April 23.

🧩 What Blackstone actually does today

Strip away the brand, and Blackstone is a manager of other people’s money that keeps very little on its own balance sheet. It runs four business segments: real estate, private equity, credit and insurance, and multi-asset investing, and it earns two broad types of income from each: a management fee charged on committed or invested capital regardless of performance, and a performance fee (Blackstone calls this performance revenue) earned only when it sells an asset or a fund clears its return hurdle. Wall Street’s shorthand for the first bucket is Fee Related Earnings, or FRE, recurring and highly predictable. The second bucket, Net Realizations, is lumpier and depends on when deals actually close.

That distinction matters more for Blackstone than for almost any other large-cap stock, because the two headline profit numbers analysts quote, FRE and Distributable Earnings (DE, which is FRE plus realized performance income), are non-GAAP measures that management defines and that differ meaningfully from GAAP net income. In the first quarter of 2026, GAAP net income attributable to Blackstone was $649.7 million. Distributable Earnings for the same quarter, the number the dividend is actually based on, was $1.76 billion, nearly three times as large, largely because GAAP consolidates Blackstone-managed funds and includes non-cash equity compensation charges that the DE measure strips out. Reading Blackstone off its GAAP income statement alone will give a materially misleading picture of what the business is actually earning for shareholders.

The other structural feature worth understanding is where Blackstone’s capital comes from. A growing share, $539.7 billion, or 48% of fee-earning assets under management as of Q1 2026, is what the firm calls perpetual capital: money with no fixed redemption date, raised through vehicles like the non-traded real estate trust BREIT, the private credit fund BCRED, and insurance company balance sheets Blackstone manages on a fee basis. Perpetual capital is stickier than a traditional ten-year private equity fund and is central to why Blackstone can keep growing fee revenue even when new fundraising slows.

India is a live part of that capital-raising story rather than a footnote. Blackstone has sponsored or backed five listed Indian real estate investment trusts: Embassy Office Parks, Mindspace Business Parks, Nexus Select Trust, Knowledge Realty Trust, and, most recently, filings for Horizon Industrial Parks and Bagmane Prime Office REIT, and has deployed tens of billions of dollars into Indian real estate over the past decade. The firm’s more recent India moves are shifting from pure office parks toward logistics, residential stakes, and data center capacity, following the same digital infrastructure theme that is reshaping its US and European portfolios.

📊 Segment breakdown

Blackstone’s four segments look very different from each other once you break out the numbers. Real estate is the only one that shrank on an AUM basis in the first quarter, even as private equity and credit both grew by double digits. Credit and insurance is now the largest segment by assets, though a fall in realised performance revenue meant its distributable earnings actually declined year over year despite the AUM growth, a reminder that AUM growth and earnings growth are not the same thing in this business.

Private equity delivered the standout quarter: distributable earnings almost doubled year over year on the back of a strong secondaries close, a $10 billion-plus opportunistic credit fundraise sitting adjacent to it in Credit & Insurance, and appreciation across corporate buyouts and infrastructure funds. Multi-Asset Investing remains the smallest segment by a wide margin, built around Blackstone’s absolute return and hedge-fund-solutions business, but it grew fee-related earnings 28% year over year, the fastest pace of any segment, off a small base.

⚡ The core growth engine: becoming the AI economy’s financier of choice

The single idea that will make or break the bull case on Blackstone over the next few years is not a new fund strategy or a rebrand. It is whether the firm can keep deploying its own and its investors’ capital profitably into the physical infrastructure the AI industry needs, faster and at greater scale than any rival.

The scale of that bet is already large. Blackstone has committed to invest more than $25 billion in Pennsylvania’s digital and energy infrastructure, combining data centre development through its portfolio company QTS with a natural gas power generation joint venture alongside utility PPL, and says the initiative should help catalyse a further $60 billion of investment into the state. In Japan, president and COO Jon Gray has said Blackstone plans to invest roughly $30 billion in AI data centres over the next three to five years, building on its existing AirTrunk platform, which secured a record green loan of close to $1.24 billion for a Tokyo AI data centre in March 2026. In the UK, Blackstone has confirmed a $13 billion investment behind a hyperscale data centre on a derelict site in Blyth, Northumberland. In May 2026, Blackstone Tactical Opportunities put $1 billion into VoltaGrid, a distributed power company addressing the electricity scarcity that is now the binding constraint on new data centre construction.

Entering 2026, the market’s working assumption was straightforward. The Fed had been cutting rates since September 2024, bringing the federal funds rate down in stages, and traders had roughly three more cuts priced in for the year ahead. By July, that number had fallen close to zero, and for several weeks over the summer, a meaningful share of Fed officials were openly discussing a hike instead of a cut.

Ten months is roughly how long it took for “the cutting cycle continues” to flip into “no cuts, and possibly a hike.” Then, within the space of a single week in July, the story flipped again, partially, as inflation data came in far cooler than expected. This is not a one-line headline. It is a live case study in how quickly the rate outlook can move, and why building a portfolio around whichever narrative is loudest this month is a mistake most retail investors make without realising it.

🕰️ How we got here: from three cuts to zero, and back to maybe one

The rate-cutting cycle began in September 2024, and by December 2025, the federal funds rate had come down to a target range of 3.50% to 3.75%. That is where it still sits today.

The chair transition added a layer of complexity that a normal cutting cycle would not have had. In January 2026, the administration nominated Kevin Warsh, a former Fed governor, to succeed Jerome Powell. His Senate confirmation hearing in April was contentious. Warsh called for what he described as a “regime change” at the central bank and blamed the Fed for the inflation surge that followed the pandemic-era rate cuts, while also insisting that monetary policy independence is essential. He was confirmed on a narrow 51-45 vote and took office on 22 May 2026.

Warsh’s first FOMC meeting, on 16-17 June, held rates unchanged, but the accompanying dot plot told the real story. The median projection for where rates would end 2026 was revised up to 3.8%, from 3.4% in March, and nine of the eighteen officials on the committee projected at least one hike by year end. This came on the back of a May inflation print of 4.2% year on year, the highest reading in three years, driven by tariff pass-through and an energy price shock tied to the conflict between the US and Iran that had begun in late February. A strong June jobs report, with employers adding a modest number of jobs but unemployment ticking down to 4.2%, reinforced the case for staying cautious rather than cutting.

By early July, prediction markets had pushed the odds of zero Fed rate cuts for all of 2026 to roughly 80%, and Goldman Sachs had shifted its own forecast for the first cut all the way out to 2027.

Then, on 14 July, two things happened on the same day. Warsh testified before Congress and told lawmakers that the Fed’s independence is “sacrosanct,” a direct response to months of public pressure from the White House, which has at times described the Fed’s board as “hostile.” Hours later, the June CPI report landed, and it surprised almost everyone. Headline inflation fell 0.4% on the month, the sharpest monthly decline since April 2020, pulling the annual rate down to 3.5% from 4.2% in May. Core inflation, which strips out food and energy, was flat on the month and eased to 2.6% annually from 2.9%. The relief came almost entirely from falling energy and petrol prices after a ceasefire between the US and Iran earlier in June.

Treasury yields fell sharply on the news, and for a brief window, a September rate cut looked plausible again.

That window did not stay open for long. Within days, the ceasefire came under strain, the US carried out renewed strikes, and oil prices jumped to a multi-week high. By the third week of July, the 10-year Treasury yield had climbed back to around 4.55-4.60%, and futures markets were once again pricing meaningful odds of a September hike rather than a cut.

This is the whipsaw that matters. The rate outlook did not move gradually over the year. It swung from three cuts, to zero, to a possible hike, to a possible cut, to a possible hike again, largely on the back of oil prices tied to a geopolitical conflict that has nothing to do with the US domestic economy on its own terms.

⚙️ Why a few tenths of a percentage point move everything

The federal funds rate itself is a narrow, technical number. What makes it matter to every portfolio is how it transmits outward.

Treasury yields move first. When the Fed signals it will hold rates for longer, or hike, longer-dated government bond yields tend to rise in anticipation, because investors demand more compensation for holding fixed income in an environment where cash itself pays well. That 10-year Treasury yield is the reference rate used to price mortgages, corporate borrowing costs, and, critically, the discount rate applied to future corporate earnings.

That last point is where equity markets feel it directly. A stock’s value, in the simplest terms, is the sum of all the cash it is expected to generate in the future, discounted back to today. Raise the discount rate, even by a small amount, and the present value of earnings that are five or ten years away falls more than the present value of earnings arriving next quarter. This is why high-multiple growth stocks and unprofitable companies betting on distant profitability are disproportionately sensitive to a hawkish shift, while businesses generating steady cash flow today are relatively insulated.

Currency markets respond to the rate differential between countries. When the Fed holds rates higher than other major central banks are willing to, dollar assets become more attractive on a pure yield basis, which tends to keep the dollar firm. That firmness is not free for anyone converting rupees to dollars to invest, or converting dollar gains back to rupees on the way out.

Credit conditions tighten with a lag. Companies and consumers with variable-rate debt, or debt coming up for refinancing, face higher costs the longer rates stay elevated, even without a single additional hike. This is the part of “higher for longer” that gets underestimated. The damage does not require new tightening. It accumulates simply from rates staying where they are for an extended stretch, while balance sheets built for a lower-rate world roll over into a higher-rate one.

🏆 Who wins and who is exposed in a no-cuts world

Not every asset responds to a hawkish Fed the same way. Some sectors are structurally positioned to benefit from rates staying elevated, while others carry a direct and mechanical drag.

Banks and financials tend to benefit from a wider gap between what they earn on loans and what they pay out on deposits, a dynamic that improves with rates staying higher rather than falling. Cash and money market instruments reward patience directly, since short-term yields stay elevated without requiring any duration or credit risk. Value and dividend-paying businesses, whose cash flows arrive largely in the present rather than a distant future, hold up better under a higher discount rate than growth names do.

On the other side, long-duration government bonds bought when yields were lower lose relative value as new issuance carries a higher coupon. Real estate investment trusts and other heavily leveraged property vehicles face the direct cost of refinancing debt at elevated rates. Emerging market currencies, the rupee included, lose some of their carry appeal when the gap between US and local rates narrows.

Gold sits in a more complicated place. It rallied to historic highs in January 2026, partly on central bank buying and partly on fears about what a politically pressured Fed might do to the dollar’s credibility, then corrected through the first half of the year as the Fed turned more hawkish than expected. The structural drivers behind the rally have not gone away; the near-term narrative is simply fighting them.

AI-linked mega-cap technology stocks are the other name worth watching closely. So far, strong earnings growth and cloud revenue have let these companies shrug off higher discount rates in a way that would have hurt a less profitable growth trade in an earlier cycle. That resilience is not unconditional. If earnings growth decelerates while rates stay elevated, the valuation math that has been forgiving for two years stops being forgiving very quickly.

🇮🇳 What this means if you’re an Indian investor holding US equities

The rupee has been trading close to record lows against the dollar through July 2026, hovering around 96-97 to the dollar and down more than 11% over the past year. A Fed that holds rates steady, or hikes, tends to keep the dollar firm against most currencies, the rupee included, which works against you in two specific ways.

If you are converting fresh rupees into dollars to invest, a firmer dollar means each dollar of exposure costs you more today than it might once the rate cycle eventually turns. If you are holding US equities you plan to sell and repatriate, the currency drag compounds on top of whatever the underlying stock does, since dollar strength this year has partly offset, and at other points amplified, the returns Indian investors have actually taken home.

The Reserve Bank of India held its own repo rate at 5.25% at its June meeting, maintaining a neutral stance, and has revised its inflation forecast for the coming financial year up to around 5.1% on higher energy costs, a direct consequence of the same oil price volatility driving the Fed’s own hesitation. The RBI’s next policy decision falls in early August, just days after the Fed’s own 28-29 July meeting, which means the two central banks’ reasoning will be worth reading side by side rather than in isolation.

For bond exposure specifically, if you hold US Treasury funds or dollar-denominated fixed income through Winvesta or elsewhere, longer-duration holdings are the ones most exposed to a rate environment that stays elevated for longer than originally priced. Shorter-duration, cash-like dollar instruments are the ones actually benefiting from where rates sit today.

For equity exposure, the same valuation sensitivity that applies to US growth stocks applies to your portfolio’s composition. A portfolio concentrated in high-multiple, pre-profit growth names carries more exposure to this specific risk than one balanced with cash-generative businesses, regardless of which country you are investing from.

The oil price angle deserves separate attention, since it cuts both ways rather than pointing in one direction for Indian investors. Rising Brent crude prices, driven by the same Iran-related tensions that are complicating the Fed’s inflation read, raise India’s import bill directly and add fresh pressure on the rupee independent of anything the Fed does. This is not purely a US monetary policy story playing out an ocean away. It reaches Indian households through the same channel, petrol and diesel prices, that it reaches American ones.

🧭 What to watch: the signals that will actually move this

The FOMC meeting on 28-29 July is the immediate date, though most pricing currently expects a hold rather than a move in either direction. The more informative signal will be the tone of the accompanying statement and whether any officials dissent publicly in either direction.

Brent crude and the state of the US-Iran ceasefire matter more than almost any single domestic data point right now, since the entire disinflation story in June came from falling energy prices, and the entire re-acceleration in yields over the following week came from oil prices climbing back up. A durable ceasefire would remove the single biggest wildcard currently sitting inside every inflation forecast.

The July CPI report, due in mid-August, will show whether June’s sharp cooling was the start of a trend or a one-off driven by a temporary lull in energy prices. A repeat of June’s softness reopens the case for a September cut. A reversal back toward May’s 4.2% print closes that door quickly.

Jobs data carries similar weight. Another strong payrolls number keeps the hawkish case alive by removing any urgency to support growth. A visibly softer print, particularly alongside cooler inflation, is the combination that would most quickly shift the Fed’s own calculus.

Warsh’s public communication is worth watching in its own right, separate from the data. His insistence on independence in front of Congress was a deliberate signal to markets that policy will not bend to political pressure, but the pressure itself has not let up, and how he continues to navigate it will shape how much credibility markets extend to future Fed guidance.

🏁 The bottom line

The rate outlook for 2026 has moved from three expected cuts, to effectively zero, to a possible hike, to a brief reopening of cut hopes, to renewed hike odds, inside a single calendar year. Betting a portfolio heavily on whichever version of that story is dominant this week has been a losing strategy at multiple points along the way.

The practical response is not to predict the next move correctly. It is to build a portfolio that does not require a specific outcome to hold up reasonably well. That means being deliberate about duration if you hold fixed income, being honest about how much of your equity exposure depends on low discount rates holding rather than earnings growth, and treating currency as an active variable in your returns rather than something that only matters when it moves against you.

Watch oil prices and the Iran ceasefire as closely as you watch the Fed’s own statements. This year, they have been telling the same story before the Fed gets there.

Energy is the best-performing sector in the S&P 500 this year, up more than a quarter since January. The reason isn’t a demand boom or a new shale discovery. It’s a war. The US and Iran have been trading strikes on and off since February, a ceasefire signed in April collapsed, a memorandum of understanding signed in June briefly reopened the Strait of Hormuz and knocked oil down sharply, and by July that truce had broken down too. Washington has now run nine consecutive nights of airstrikes on Iranian targets, Houthi forces have threatened to blockade Red Sea shipping to Saudi Arabia, and tanker traffic through Hormuz has thinned out again. Crude is back near a five-week high.

If you own an energy ETF, that’s the good news you’ve been reading about. Here’s the part most investors haven’t seen: the same fund that’s up nearly 30% this year has been bleeding institutional money for three months straight. Retail flows into the direct oil trade are doing the opposite, rising just as the professional money is stepping back. That divergence is the story this week, not the headline price move.

Let me introduce you to someone who might be you.

🎯 Meet Ishaan

Ishaan, 34, works in supply chain operations for a manufacturing exporter in Chennai. His US portfolio is worth approximately ₹38 lakhs: ₹13.5 lakhs in VOO, ₹9.5 lakhs in QQQ, and two energy positions he added at different points this year for different reasons.

In January 2026, with the Iran conflict already a few weeks old and oil prices choppy, Ishaan put ₹4.2 lakhs into the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) as what he described to himself as a “stable, value hedge” against a portfolio that otherwise leans heavily on US tech. That position is now worth roughly ₹5.4 lakhs, a gain of about 29%, broadly in line with XLE’s year-to-date move.

In mid-July, after watching oil jump on the latest round of strikes, he added ₹1.6 lakhs to the United States Oil Fund (USO), a futures-based ETF that tracks front-month WTI crude directly. That position is now worth about ₹1.7 lakhs.

Ishaan thinks of these as two different bets: a “boring” sector allocation and a “tactical” trade on the war continuing. What he hasn’t worked out is that they are largely the same bet wearing two different outfits, and together they now account for close to 19% of his US portfolio, a concentration he arrived at without ever deciding on it deliberately.

The part that should worry him more: professional money in his older, “boring” position has been quietly exiting for months. The money piling into his newer, “tactical” position is largely retail, arriving late, after most of the move has already happened.

⛽ Three ways investors are playing the Iran oil shock

For Indian investors accessing US markets, the Iran-driven oil shock shows up through three cleanly differentiated ETFs.

XLE (Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF) holds the large-cap US energy majors and refiners, including Exxon, Chevron, Valero, and Phillips 66. It’s an equity fund, so it carries earnings, dividends, and balance-sheet quality alongside the crude price. XLE is trading around $57.94, within striking distance of its 52-week high of $63.46, and is the best-performing S&P sector fund of 2026.

VDE (Vanguard Energy ETF) is the broader, more diversified cousin, holding around 111 energy names with roughly $11.8 billion in assets and a market-weight approach. It behaves similarly to XLE over time but spreads single-stock risk across a wider basket, and currently yields close to 2.7%.

USO (United States Oil Fund) skips equities entirely and tracks front-month WTI futures directly. It’s the purest, fastest way to express a view on the oil price itself, and the most punishing one to hold for long: because it has to keep rolling expiring futures contracts into new ones, USO suffers structurally from contango, a persistent drag that has left the fund down roughly 7% annualised since its 2006 inception even after a year in which the spot price of oil rose sharply.

Here’s where the fund flow data gets interesting. The table below tracks how money has actually moved into and out of XLE and USO over different windows this year. It’s directional and illustrative, built from ETF flow trackers such as ETF Database and VettaFi, not a single audited dataset, and should be verified independently before it informs any decision.

Read that table carefully and the picture is not “everyone is piling into energy.” It’s “the equity side of the trade has been quietly distributed by professional money for three months, while the futures side of the trade is where retail money is now arriving.” XLE’s price is near its highs because the war has been genuinely good for energy company earnings and refining margins. But price strength and fund flows are telling two different stories about who’s still buying.

🎲 Three scenarios for the next quarter

What happens next in the Iran conflict has a direct, mechanical effect on Ishaan’s ₹7.1 lakh combined energy sleeve (XLE plus USO). The scenarios, probabilities, and return assumptions below are an illustrative editorial stress test built on assumed returns and subjective probabilities. They are not a forecast, a house view, or a guarantee of any outcome.

Scenario 1: De-escalation snapback, 25% probability Mediators succeed where the April and June attempts failed, a ceasefire actually holds this time, and Hormuz traffic normalises on a sustained basis. Gulf exporters, whose crude and condensate shipments already touched their highest level since before the war in the first half of July according to shipping-data reporting, ramp further. Oil drifts back toward the US Energy Information Administration’s own pre-escalation 3Q26 forecast of roughly $74 a barrel for Brent. XLE gives back a chunk of its war premium, falling an assumed 12% as refining margins normalise and the sector re-rates toward its pre-conflict multiple. USO, with its structural roll cost working against it even harder on the way down, falls an assumed 18%. On Ishaan’s sleeve, that’s a loss of about ₹0.96 lakhs, roughly 2.5% of his total portfolio.

Most investors who have glanced at Intel’s chart this year have seen a stock up well over 150 per cent and assumed it is a squeeze in an unloved chipmaker riding the general AI wave. That is not quite what happened. Apple has a preliminary agreement to manufacture chips on Intel’s newest process node, ending a roughly six-year exile to TSMC exclusivity. Microsoft, Amazon and Google have all signed on as data centre or foundry customers. Nvidia, a company that was busy trying to make Intel irrelevant two years ago, now owns a $5 billion stake in it, and the US government owns roughly a tenth of the company outright. Thursday’s second-quarter results, due after market close on 23 July 2026, are where all of that turns from a narrative into a set of numbers.

🧩 Not one chipmaker, but four

Most coverage of Intel still leads with the Client Computing Group, the unit that makes the processors sitting inside laptops and desktops, because that is the Intel most people grew up buying. It generated $7.7 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 2026, up a modest 1 per cent year on year, per the company’s earnings release. It is the legacy anchor: large, cash generative, and barely growing.

The more interesting segment is Data Centre and AI, or DCAI, which posted $5.1 billion in Q1, up 22 per cent year on year, with an operating profit of $1.5 billion, a 31 per cent margin, per Intel’s earnings transcript. This is the business that CFO David Zinsner told analysts now represents around 60 per cent of Intel’s total revenue when combined with other AI-linked lines, and it grew about 40 per cent year on year. Within DCAI, Intel’s custom ASIC business, purpose-built silicon designed for specific customer workloads, more than doubled year on year and is already running at an annualised rate above $1 billion.

Then there is Intel Foundry, the division at the centre of the turnaround story: $5.4 billion in Q1 revenue, up 16 per cent year on year and 20 per cent sequentially, but still posting an operating loss of $2.4 billion, narrowed by $72 million from the prior quarter as yields improved across the Intel 3, Intel 4 and 18A nodes, per the company’s Q1 transcript. External foundry revenue, meaning chips Intel makes for other companies rather than itself, was just $174 million for the quarter. That is a small number today. It is also the number every investor betting on this turnaround is watching most closely.

The fourth bucket, All Other, houses what remains of Altera and Mobileye after Intel sold a majority stake in Altera to Silver Lake for $3.3 billion in 2025 and separately monetised part of its Mobileye holding. Revenue there fell 33 per cent year on year to $628 million, though it still turned a small operating profit of $102 million.

🏭 The comeback nobody priced in

Intel’s foundry ambitions have been a running joke on Wall Street for the better part of a decade: a company promising to catch up to TSMC’s manufacturing lead while losing billions of dollars a year trying. What changed in 2025 and 2026 is not the ambition. It is who showed up to fund it and buy from it.

Start with the balance sheet. In August 2025, the Trump administration converted roughly $8.9 billion in CHIPS Act grants into a 10 per cent equity stake in Intel, receiving about 433.3 million shares at a cost of roughly $20.50 apiece, per CNBC’s original reporting. At Intel’s current price of around $93, that stake is worth well over $40 billion, more than four times what it cost. SoftBank followed with a $2 billion investment at $23 a share the same month. Then, in September 2025, Nvidia announced a $5 billion investment of its own, alongside a joint plan to co-develop data centre and PC chips: Intel building custom x86 processors that Nvidia’s GPU chiplets plug into. Analyst Dan Ives at the time called it a turning point that brought Intel back to the centre of the AI conversation rather than watching from the sidelines. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has pointed to a market opportunity he pegs at roughly $50 billion a year for the combined product line. The Nvidia deal closed in December 2025 after the FTC signed off on it.

That capital did two things. It gave Intel cash to pay down debt (about $4.3 billion in Q3 2025 alone) and it gave the market a reason to believe Washington, Tokyo and Silicon Valley all had a financial stake in Intel’s survival, not just its recovery.

Then came the customers. Microsoft signed on for custom 18A-based chip design in February 2024. Amazon Web Services followed in September 2024. Google signed a long-term DCAI agreement disclosed on the Q1 2026 call. And in May 2026, the Wall Street Journal reported that Intel and Apple had reached a preliminary agreement for Intel to manufacture some Apple silicon, a deal that would end Apple’s near-total reliance on TSMC. President Trump announced the arrangement on Truth Social on 18 June 2026, and Intel’s stock jumped roughly 11 per cent that day to close near $134, per RTTNews. Reports since then, including from TechPowerUp, suggest Apple is looking at Intel’s 18A-P node for a future MacBook chip and the newer 14A node for an iPhone chip, with production not expected to begin before around 2027.

The technical milestone behind all of this is 18A-P, a refined version of Intel’s most advanced process, which entered what the industry calls risk production in mid-June 2026, per an announcement at the VLSI Symposium in Honolulu. Intel’s foundry chief, Naga Chandrasekaran, framed it as an early step in a long process rather than a finished product, per CNBC’s coverage. The node reportedly delivers about 9 per cent higher performance or 18 per cent lower power draw than standard 18A. Some reporting in early July suggested profitable yields on 18A-P may not arrive until late 2026 or 2027, a concern that fed directly into the broader semiconductor sell-off that has weighed on Intel’s stock this month. That gap, between a real customer list and a foundry business that still loses billions of dollars a quarter, is the entire investment debate in one sentence.

Watching US markets week to week without context is just noise. Banks turned in one of the strongest quarters Wall Street has seen in years. Inflation data came in cooler than anyone expected. And none of it mattered once Taiwan Semiconductor beat estimates, raised its capex guidance, and watched its stock—and the entire chip complex—sell off anyway. This was the week the market stopped rewarding good news reflexively and started asking, “At what price?”

Monday opened with a fresh jolt from the Gulf. President Trump announced he was reinstating what he called a blockade on Iranian shipping through the Strait of Hormuz after the US and Iran traded fresh attacks over the weekend and Tehran said it had closed the waterway, undercutting an interim ceasefire signed just weeks earlier. Brent crude posted its biggest one-day gain in more than six years, surging roughly 9.6% to settle near $83.80, per Reuters. Equities fell broadly—the S&P 500 dropped 0.79% to 7,515.34, the Nasdaq slid 1.55% to 25,873.18, and the Dow eased 0.26% to 52,498.64, per CNBC. Energy, financials, and utilities were the only pockets of green; chip stocks led declines, with memory maker SK Hynix down about 9%.

Tuesday was “earnings super Tuesday.” JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, and Bank of America all reported before the bell, on the same morning as the June CPI report and new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s first testimony before the House Financial Services Committee. CPI fell 0.4% month-over-month, the steepest monthly decline in six years—pulling the annual rate down to 3.5% from May’s elevated print, per the BLS and FXStreet. Goldman Sachs posted a record quarter, with EPS of $20.98 against a roughly $14.5 estimate, and JPMorgan beat by one of its widest margins in years. Not every bank was rewarded, though: Citigroup and Wells Fargo both beat estimates and still saw their shares fall. Warsh, testifying for the first time as chair, explicitly declined to call the softer inflation data “mission accomplished.” Indexes rose regardless—the S&P gained 0.38% to 7,543.59, the Nasdaq added 0.9% to 26,107.01, and the Dow ticked up 0.02% to 52,508.27, per CNBC.

Wednesday brought Warsh’s second day of testimony, this time to the Senate Banking Committee, alongside a June Producer Price Index that unexpectedly fell 0.3%—its first monthly drop in nearly a year—with core PPI up a modest 0.1%, per the Labor Department and Axios. Rate-hike odds cooled sharply: CME FedWatch data showed the probability of a hold at the July 29 meeting rise to around 86%, while the odds of a September hike fell to roughly 44% from 50% the day before, per TradingEconomics. Morgan Stanley beat estimates comfortably (EPS $3.46 versus $2.89 expected). Oil held steady as the US carried out further strikes on Iran and reinstated its naval blockade, with WTI at $79.60 and Brent at $84.95, per CNBC. Indexes closed at fresh weekly highs—S&P +0.4% to 7,572.42, Nasdaq +0.62% to 26,269.23, Dow +0.29% to 52,658.64—and the VIX fell 5% to 15.67.

Thursday was the week’s real turning point. Taiwan Semiconductor reported a Q2 beat, with revenue of $40.2 billion near the top of its own guidance range, and raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to $60-64 billion from $52-56 billion—and its stock fell anyway, dragging the rest of the chip complex down with it. Micron, Intel, AMD, and Broadcom all declined more than 5%, while Alphabet dropped roughly 4.4-4.6% on reports that Google’s flagship AI model is running months behind schedule, per Bloomberg. June retail sales rose a modest 0.2% (in line with estimates, down from May’s revised 1% gain), and jobless claims fell to 208,000. After the close, Netflix’s Q2 numbers were roughly in line with estimates, but Q3 revenue guidance of $12.86 billion missed the Street’s roughly $13 billion estimate, and shares sank about 9% in after-hours trading, per CNBC. The CNN Fear & Greed Index slid into “Fear” territory for the first time in weeks. Indexes: S&P -0.51% to 7,533.77, Nasdaq -1.47% to 25,881.95, Dow -0.20% to 52,552.97; the VIX jumped 6.76% to 16.73.

Friday opened lower, extending Thursday’s chip-led rout. Nasdaq 100 futures fell further after Thursday’s 1.6% drop, with Netflix’s post-earnings slide adding to the overhang. Asian markets sold off broadly overnight—Japan’s Nikkei fell around 4% and China’s CSI 300 dropped roughly 3.6%—while European chip-equipment names like ASML and ASMI slid in sympathy. Friday’s economic calendar included housing starts, industrial production, import and export prices, and the preliminary University of Michigan consumer sentiment reading. Heading into the session, the week-to-date scoreboard read: S&P 500 down about 0.6%, Dow down about 0.2%, and Nasdaq down roughly 1.5%, per CNBC—a week that touched nearly every major 2026 storyline (Iran, the Fed, AI capex) and still ended in the red.

😶‍🌫️ Sentiment watch

The CNN Fear & Greed Index moved into “Fear” territory by Thursday, with independent trackers putting the reading in the low-to-mid 40s heading into Friday—a meaningful shift from the calmer, more neutral tone that had prevailed through Wednesday. The VIX told a similar story: it fell to 15.67 on Wednesday, a multi-week low, before jumping 6.76% to 16.73 on Thursday as the chip selloff spread.

That’s not panic—the VIX remains well below the levels seen during the sharpest phases of this year’s Iran-driven selloffs—but the direction matters. A market that spent Tuesday and Wednesday celebrating beats from banks and cooling inflation data spent Thursday deciding that a semiconductor giant’s beat-and-raise quarter wasn’t good enough. That’s a market genuinely unsure which of its own storylines to believe.

In January 2026, Donald Trump nominated Kevin Warsh to run the Federal Reserve because he wanted a chair who would cut interest rates faster than Jerome Powell had. By June, Warsh’s first move as chair was to strip the Fed’s easing bias out of its policy statement entirely. By July, Bank of America was penciling in three separate rate hikes before the year is out. Nobody planned this outcome, and almost nobody called it with confidence even six months ago. It happened because a war in the Middle East pushed oil and inflation higher at the same time a new Fed chair turned out more hawkish than his resume suggested, and a labor market that refuses to fully break gave him room to act on it. If you hold US equities from India, this is not background noise. It is one of the biggest swing factors for how every dollar you’ve invested performs over the next six months, in both dollar and rupee terms.

🏛️ From a cutting cycle to a hawkish pivot

For most of 2024 and 2025, the Fed’s story was simple: rates were coming down. It cut three times between September and December 2024, paused through the first eight months of 2025 to see how Trump’s tariffs would feed into prices, then cut three more times between September and December 2025 as the labor market cooled. By the end of 2025, the federal funds rate sat at 3.50% to 3.75%, and the market’s working assumption was that 2026 would bring one, maybe two, more cuts.

Then the succession question arrived. Powell’s term as chair was due to end in May 2026, and in January, Trump nominated Kevin Warsh, a former Fed governor known in 2008 and 2009 for worrying more about inflation than jobs, to replace him. The irony is that Trump wanted Warsh specifically because Warsh had spent the prior year arguing for lower rates and had pointed to AI-driven productivity gains as a reason the Fed could afford to cut. Markets, however, remembered his older track record. The nomination alone sent Treasury yields higher, strengthened the dollar, and knocked gold down sharply in a single session, on the assumption that a Warsh Fed would ultimately behave like a hawk, whatever he said on the campaign trail for the job.

Before Warsh even took office, the backdrop shifted again. On 28 February 2026, the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran, and the conflict spread quickly into the Strait of Hormuz, the corridor that carries roughly a fifth of the world’s seaborne oil. Iran restricted shipping through the strait, oil prices jumped, and headline US inflation climbed to a three-year high. The Fed, still under Powell at its March meeting, held rates steady and kept one projected cut for 2026 on its dot plot, but the direction of travel was already less certain than it had looked in December.

Warsh was confirmed by the narrowest Senate vote for a Fed chair in history and was sworn in on 22 May 2026. His first meeting, on 17 June, was the moment the story flipped. The Fed held rates steady for a fourth consecutive meeting, as expected. What markets didn’t expect was how it said it. The post-meeting statement ran to roughly 130 words, a fraction of the length Powell’s Fed typically used, and it dropped the language that had signaled an eventual cut. The updated dot plot told the real story: nine of eighteen officials now projected at least one rate hike by the end of 2026, and the median year-end rate projection jumped from a range of 3.25% to 3.75% in March to 3.6% to 4.1% in June. The 2-year Treasury yield, the part of the curve most sensitive to near-term Fed moves, jumped roughly 14 basis points on the day. In an unusual footnote, Powell himself stayed on the Fed’s Board of Governors after his term as chair ended and voted alongside Warsh to hold rates, a reminder that this wasn’t one person’s call.

Since then, the picture has stayed genuinely unsettled rather than resolving in one direction. US headline CPI hit 4.2% in May, a three-year high driven mostly by post-war oil prices, even as core measures stripping out food and energy stayed more moderate. Job growth had been running at a healthy clip through the spring, but June’s report showed a sharp slowdown to just 57,000 new jobs, with unemployment ticking up to 4.2%. Then, in early July, the fragile Iran ceasefire broke down again: renewed strikes, attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, and a fresh US blockade threat sent oil and Treasury yields higher once more, only for a cooler-than-expected June CPI print on 14 July to pull some of that back. Every one of these data points has been moving the odds of a hike around by the day.

🔧 How this actually moves stocks, bonds, and the dollar

A rate decision doesn’t just change what banks charge each other overnight. It resets the math behind almost every asset you own through a few connected channels.

The clearest is the discount rate effect on equities. A stock’s value is, in theory, the sum of all the cash it will earn in the future, discounted back to today. When the Fed signals higher rates for longer, that discount rate rises, and the present value of far-off earnings shrinks. This hits high-multiple growth and AI-linked stocks hardest, since a large share of their value sits in profits expected years from now, while it barely touches a company whose earnings are already large and near-term. You can see this playing out in real time: chip and AI-infrastructure names have been swinging several percent in a single session depending on whether that day’s inflation print or Fed commentary reads as hawkish or dovish, while more defensive sectors have moved far less.

Bonds work through simple arithmetic: prices and yields move in opposite directions. If the Fed hikes, or even just signals hikes are more likely, yields on new bonds rise, and existing bonds paying a lower fixed rate become less attractive, so their prices fall. The 10-year Treasury yield has climbed to around 4.6% and the 2-year to around 4.2% in mid-July, both near two-month highs, as the market has repriced the odds of a September hike from roughly a quarter to, on some days, over 70%, swinging back and forth with each new headline out of the Middle East.

Currencies move through interest rate differentials. Higher US rates, relative to what other major central banks are offering, make dollar assets more attractive to global capital, which tends to pull the dollar higher against other currencies, the rupee included. That single mechanism is the direct link between what happens in Washington and what your US portfolio is worth when you eventually convert it back to rupees, which we’ll come back to below.

History offers a useful, if uncomfortable, precedent for why the surprise matters more than the size of the move. In February 1994, the Fed under Alan Greenspan raised its policy rate by just 25 basis points, from 3% to 3.25%, the first hike since 1989. It was a small move, but markets had spent the prior year anchored on the assumption that rates would stay low, so the shift, small as it was, triggered what’s still remembered as the “Great Bond Massacre.” The 30-year Treasury yield rose from around 6.2% to nearly 8% within nine months, and bond investors globally lost several hundred billion dollars, by some estimates over a trillion, as the Fed kept hiking through the year to 5.5%, then to 6% by early 1995. The lesson that’s held up since is that markets can absorb almost any rate path if it’s well telegraphed in advance; what actually causes damage is the gap between what was priced in and what the central bank delivers. Currently, that gap is precisely what’s opened up: a market that spent late 2025 pricing continued cuts is having to reprice for the possibility of hikes instead, in real time, mid-cycle.

🏆 Winners and losers if the hikes actually land

Not every part of the market reacts to a hawkish Fed the same way, and the current earnings season is already showing the split.

Actual outcomes depend on how much of a hike is already priced in by the time it happens.

The broader rotation since June has favored financials, healthcare, and industrials over technology, even though tech remains up meaningfully for the year overall. That’s consistent with what higher-for-longer rate expectations usually do to a market: it doesn’t necessarily mean stocks fall; it means leadership changes.

🇮🇳 What this means if you’re investing in US stocks from India

A hawkish Fed reaches your portfolio through a channel that has nothing to do with which stocks you own: the rupee.

Higher US rates, relative to India’s, tend to strengthen the dollar, and that’s exactly what’s been happening. USD/INR touched an all-time high of roughly 96.84 in May 2026 and has stayed close to that level since, trading around 96 through mid-July as renewed Middle East tensions and hawkish Fed commentary have kept the dollar firm. The Reserve Bank of India has been selling dollars through state-run banks to slow the rupee’s slide, and corporate hedging activity hit a record in June as importers and exporters alike tried to lock in rates ahead of more volatility.

This cuts in two different directions depending on where you sit. If you already hold US equities bought with rupees converted earlier, a stronger dollar means each dollar of gains is worth more in rupees when you eventually sell and bring the money home, a partial offset if the equity side of your position takes a hit from a genuine rate hike. But if you’re building a new US position now, buying dollars to invest gets more expensive in rupee terms, since your rupees simply buy fewer dollars at 96 than they did at 90.

The Reserve Bank of India is, in its own way, stuck in a version of the same bind as the Fed. India’s own retail inflation accelerated to an 18-month high in June, driven by the same oil price pressure coming out of the Strait of Hormuz, which has left the RBI holding its repo rate at 5.25% for a third consecutive meeting, in a “neutral” stance, after 125 basis points of cuts through 2025. A weaker rupee raises the cost of imported oil in rupee terms, which feeds back into Indian inflation, which gives the RBI less room to cut even if it wanted to support growth. Both central banks are, right now, being pushed toward caution by the same energy shock.

The practical takeaway isn’t to time your remittances around every Fed headline, since nobody does that reliably. It’s to be aware that the currency leg of your US investment is not a fixed exchange rate you can ignore. If you’re planning a lump sum transfer under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme in the near term, a materially weaker rupee changes the effective entry price of every dollar you deploy, independent of what the underlying stock does.

🧭 What to watch from here

A handful of dates and data points will tell you more than the daily headlines.

The July 28-29 FOMC meeting doesn’t come with updated economic projections, so the real signal will be in the statement’s language and Warsh’s press conference tone, not necessarily a policy change. The bigger event is the September 16-17 meeting, which does carry a fresh dot plot and is the point by which several banks expect the first actual hike, if one comes at all. Between now and then, every monthly CPI and PPI release matters more than usual, since the entire debate hinges on whether the current inflation spike is a temporary, war-driven energy shock or something stickier.

Oil itself is arguably the single cleanest leading indicator right now. Strait of Hormuz shipping volumes and Brent crude prices are moving almost daily with the state of the Iran ceasefire, and every spike has fed directly into Treasury yields and rate hike odds within hours. Warsh has also launched five internal task forces, including one reassessing how the Fed measures inflation itself, potentially moving toward a “trimmed mean” approach that strips out more volatile price swings. If adopted, that alone could make inflation look closer to target without a single rate move, which is worth watching as a wildcard.

A Fed chair who was picked to cut rates faster is currently signaling the opposite, and the reason has less to do with any single decision than with a war-driven oil shock landing on top of an economy that hadn’t fully cooled. That combination has taken the Fed’s own committee from projecting one more cut in March to nine of eighteen members projecting a hike by June, and market-implied odds have been swinging by double digits within the same week ever since.

None of this means a hike is certain, and the same data that pushed odds up in early July pulled them back down within days when inflation came in cooler than expected. What it does mean is that the easy assumption many investors were carrying into 2026, that rates only had one direction left to go, is no longer safe to hold. For a portfolio built around US equities, that shows up as sharper rotations between growth and value, more volatile bond yields, and a dollar that’s firmer than the “de-dollarization” story many were tracking earlier this year would have suggested. For an Indian investor, it shows up most directly in a rupee that’s sitting close to its weakest level on record.

The useful habit here isn’t predicting the next FOMC decision. It’s understanding why the range of outcomes widened so much in such a short window, so that whichever way it breaks, you’re not caught assuming the old, simpler story still holds.

Gold is down 26% from the all time high it set on January 29, 2026. Most investors reading the headlines figure that means the gold trade is over. The World Gold Council’s data says otherwise: central banks bought gold through the first half of 2026 at a pace that pushed bullion past US Treasuries as the world’s largest reserve asset, even as retail money fled gold ETFs by the tonne. Two of the most sophisticated buyer groups in the market are looking at the same asset and doing the opposite thing. If you own GLD, IAU, or SGOL, that split isn’t background noise. It’s the question you need answered before you touch your position again.

🎯 Meet Karan, and the gold position he can’t quite look at

Karan, 36, works in operations at a SaaS company in Chennai. His US portfolio through Winvesta is worth ₹52 lakh, built over four years of steady contributions into a mix of index funds and a handful of single stocks.

On January 27, 2026, two days before gold touched its record high of $5,595 an ounce, Karan put ₹8.4 lakh into GLD. He’d watched gold roughly double in under two years and didn’t want to miss the next leg. By early June, gold had fallen more than 20% from that peak, and Karan did what a lot of investors do when a position turns red: he added more. ₹2.6 lakh went into SGOL in the first week of June, in the low $4,000s, in what he told himself was “averaging down,” just days before gold broke below $4,000 for the first time since November 2025.

Today, that combined position is worth roughly ₹9.1 lakh against ₹11 lakh invested, a paper loss of about ₹1.9 lakh, or 17%. The GLD tranche is down close to 24% from Karan’s entry. The SGOL tranche, bought nearer the recent lows, is up a couple of percent. Gold ETFs now make up about 17% of Karan’s portfolio; he’d originally planned for 15%, as a hedge, not a bet.

Here’s what makes Karan’s situation harder than a plain “buy the dip or cut the loss” call: the two biggest categories of buyer in the gold market right now don’t agree with each other, and neither one is retail.

🪙 What’s actually inside GLD, IAU, and SGOL, and where the money is really flowing

All three ETFs in Karan’s position do the same basic job: hold physical gold bars in a vault and issue shares that track the price, minus a small annual fee. The differences show up in cost and custody, and they start to matter once a position gets this large.

On a ₹10 lakh position held for ten years, the gap between GLD’s 0.40% fee and SGOL’s 0.17% works out to roughly ₹23,000 in cumulative costs. Not huge, but not nothing.

The bigger question is what’s happening to the money moving in and out of funds like these. The table below is a directional summary of gold ETF flow data reported by the World Gold Council and cited by outlets tracking it through 2026. Treat it as illustrative context, not a live, verified figure for this exact week.

Central banks were not playing the same game. The People’s Bank of China added close to 15 tonnes to its reserves in June, its largest single month purchase since October 2023 and its twentieth straight month of buying. Globally, central banks bought a net 244 tonnes in the first quarter of 2026 alone, up 3% year on year, according to the World Gold Council. By June, the European Central Bank’s own report on the international role of the euro confirmed that gold had overtaken US Treasuries as the largest asset class held across global central bank reserves, a first in modern financial history.

Retail ETF holders were selling into weakness. Central banks were buying through it. Karan’s ₹9.1 lakh position sits right in the middle of that disagreement.

Most investors still size up Goldman Sachs the way they’d size up any bank: quarterly trading revenue, net interest margin, maybe a marquee merger mandate every few months. That framing missed what actually happened in the first half of 2026. Goldman sat lead-left on SpaceX’s $85.7 billion initial public offering, the largest in history. A month later, it was one of four banks pricing SK Hynix’s $26.5 billion Nasdaq listing, the largest ADR sale ever completed by a foreign company. It is underwriting them, collecting a fee on nearly every major capital-raising event happening in public markets right now, and Tuesday’s earnings will be the first real readout of what that is worth.

🏦 Not one bank, but three

Goldman reports through three segments, and the split explains why this quarter matters more than a typical bank earnings day.

Global Banking & Markets is the engine. In the first quarter of 2026, it delivered a record $12.74 billion in net revenue, up 19% year over year. Investment banking fees inside that segment jumped 48% to $2.84 billion, with advisory revenue alone up 89% to $1.5 billion as Goldman held the number one ranking among global M&A advisors, with an announced deal-volume lead of roughly $150 billion over its closest peer, per the firm’s earnings materials. Equities trading posted a record $5.3 billion in net revenue, while fixed income, currencies and commodities added another $4 billion. Marquee, Goldman’s institutional trading and research platform, saw monthly active users climb more than 30% year over year, a sign the digital plumbing behind all this is scaling too.

Asset & Wealth Management is the compounding machine underneath. Assets under supervision hit a record near $3.7 trillion in the first quarter, and the division logged its 33rd consecutive quarter of positive long-term fee-based inflows, roughly $62 billion worth. CEO David Solomon has put a specific number on where he wants this to go: $750 billion in alternative assets under supervision by 2030, up from roughly $429 billion today, built on a private credit and private equity opportunity Solomon himself has sized at more than $3.5 trillion. Two acquisitions closed inside this window alone: Industry Ventures for venture capital secondaries, and Innovator Capital Management for ETFs, the latter instantly putting Goldman among the top 10 global providers of active ETFs.

Platform Solutions is the part of the business Goldman would rather investors forget. Revenue there fell 33% year over year to $411 million in the first quarter, largely because the Apple Card partnership is being wound down and held for sale. It’s a small, shrinking slice of a much larger machine, and its decline is arguably good news: Goldman’s consumer-banking detour is finally closing out.

🚀 The bank behind 2026’s two record-breaking stock sales

Two deals define why Goldman’s setup looks different heading into this print.

SpaceX’s initial public offering priced on June 11 at $135 a share, valuing Elon Musk’s company at roughly $1.75 trillion, the largest IPO valuation on record. Once underwriters exercised their overallotment option days later, the deal had raised $85.7 billion, more than three times what Alibaba raised in its 2014 listing, the previous record holder. Goldman sat lead-left, the senior structuring and advisory role, and alongside Morgan Stanley earned roughly $100 million in fees from that single transaction, per Fortune’s reporting on the fee structure. Total underwriting fees across the syndicate ran to roughly $646 million.

A month later, Goldman turned up again as one of four joint lead underwriters, alongside Bank of America, Citigroup and JPMorgan, on SK Hynix’s $26.5 billion American Depositary Share offering, which priced at $149 per ADS and began regular Nasdaq trading this week. It’s the largest ADR offering in history and the largest-ever US listing by an Asian issuer, and the order book came in more than seven times oversubscribed, per InsiderFinance’s reporting.

Those two deals alone would make for an unusual year. They landed inside a half-year that was already the busiest on record for global dealmaking. Mergermarket put total global M&A volume at $3.16 trillion for the first half of 2026, up 44% year over year, while other trackers put the figure closer to $2.7 to $2.8 trillion, still the strongest half-year in close to two decades by most counts. Technology led every sector for a tenth straight quarter, powered by OpenAI’s $122 billion funding round and SpaceX’s roughly $250 billion acquisition of xAI, which alone accounted for close to 30% of total announced deal value in the first quarter. Goldman picked up its own share of that wave too: notable advisory mandates included Unilever’s roughly $43 billion move for McCormick, Sysco’s roughly $29 billion deal for Jetro, and a roughly $26 billion transaction between Cortera and Devon, alongside an advisory role on Trimble’s sale of its transportation unit and an expanded share of EMEA M&A mandates in the first half of the year. Closer to home for wealth clients, Goldman also picked up roughly $70 billion in retirement-plan wins with Verizon and Lockheed Martin earlier this month.

💰 What Tuesday’s earnings need to prove

Goldman reports second-quarter results before the market opens on Tuesday, July 14, and the first quarter it just posted set a genuinely high bar. Net revenue came in at $17.23 billion, up 14% year over year, with net earnings of $5.63 billion and diluted earnings per share of $17.55, the second-highest quarterly EPS in the firm’s history and a beat of roughly 7% against a Wall Street consensus estimate near $16.40, per multiple analyst trackers. Return on equity ran at 19.8% and return on tangible equity at 21.3%. Goldman returned $6.38 billion to shareholders in the quarter, split between $5 billion of buybacks and $1.38 billion of dividends, while holding a common equity tier 1 capital ratio of 12.5%, comfortably above its 11.4% regulatory requirement.

Before the opening bell on Tuesday, July 7, every fund tracking the Nasdaq-100 became a forced buyer of SpaceX stock. J.P. Morgan estimated automatic purchases of up to 4.3 billion dollars from the QQQ ETF alone, and as much as 27 billion dollars once every fund tracking the Nasdaq-100 and Russell indices was counted, landing on stocks where only 3 to 5% of shares actually trade freely. None of that buying happened because a portfolio manager decided SpaceX was cheap. It happened because a rulebook said so.

This is index inclusion, one of the least understood mechanics in modern investing. It operates quietly in the background of nearly every diversified portfolio, including Nasdaq-100 mutual funds and ETFs that hundreds of thousands of Indian investors use for one-tap exposure to Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia. Most of the time it barely registers. Then a company the size of SpaceX joins overnight, and the scale of what these rules actually do becomes impossible to ignore.

How index investing quietly took over the market 📈

Passive investing was pitched as the boring option. Buy a fund that tracks an index, pay a low fee, and let the market do the work instead of trying to beat it. That pitch has been so successful that passive funds now own a genuinely large share of the market they were designed to simply mirror.

By 2024, the combined assets of passively managed mutual funds and ETFs in the US had overtaken those of actively managed funds for the first time. As of May 2026, indexed mutual funds and ETFs held $ 21.82 trillion, compared with $ 18.75 trillion in active funds, per Investment Company Institute data. Within US equities specifically, industry estimates put the passive share at somewhere around 60% of fund assets. Some academic research argues the true passive ownership share, once you count internal indexing by pension funds and closet indexing by active managers, runs higher still, though those estimates are contested.

None of this is a conspiracy. It is the direct result of decades of evidence showing that most active managers fail to beat their benchmarks after fees, and of investors voting with their money accordingly. But the side effect is mechanical: index funds do not decide what to buy. The index provider decides, through a published rulebook, and every fund tracking that index follows along, on the same day, at the same price, regardless of what any of that money actually thinks the stock is worth.

Mega IPOs are where this becomes visible. SpaceX went public on June 12, 2026, closing its first day of trading at a market capitalisation of roughly 2.1 trillion dollars, one of the largest listings in history. Historically, an IPO that size would sit outside every major index for up to a year, waiting to season and build a tradable float. Nasdaq changed that. Effective May 1, 2026, any newly listed company that ranks in the top 40 of the Nasdaq-100 by market cap can enter the index after just 15 trading days, with no minimum float requirement. SpaceX qualified almost the moment it started trading.

The mechanics: how a 3% float meets a 27 billion dollar order 🔧

Index inclusion sounds simple: a stock gets added, funds buy it. The scale of the numbers involved is where it gets genuinely strange.

Nasdaq-100 funds don’t buy a company at its full market capitalisation. They weight it by float, the portion of shares actually available for public trading, since that’s the only portion an index fund can realistically acquire. SpaceX’s total market cap on inclusion day sat above 2 trillion dollars, but with only 3 to 5% of shares in public hands, its float-adjusted value was a fraction of that headline number.

Nasdaq’s new methodology carried one unusual wrinkle: a weighting multiplier for low-float stocks, scaling up a large IPO’s float-adjusted weight by up to 3 times until its float ratio reaches 33.3%, according to Morningstar’s analysis of the rule change. Nasdaq built that multiplier so large new listings would be represented at something closer to their true economic size, rather than an artificially tiny weight simply because insiders haven’t sold yet. The side effect is that funds have to buy more of a stock than its tradable float alone would suggest, concentrating demand into an even smaller pool of shares. Total assets tracking the Nasdaq-100, across ETFs, mutual funds, and derivatives, exceed $ 1.4 trillion. SpaceX’s initial weight in the index still landed under 1%, since the float adjustment keeps even a 2-trillion-dollar company small on paper for now, but the mechanical buying still had to happen on schedule, all at once, at the market open.

The S&P 500 works differently, and the contrast is worth sitting with. In May 2026, S&P Dow Jones Indices opened a consultation on relaxing its own rules for megacap IPOs, shortening the 12-month seasoning period and waiving the requirement for four consecutive quarters of GAAP profitability. On June 4, it rejected its own proposal. All existing eligibility rules remained in place. That single decision means SpaceX cannot enter the S&P 500, where more than 11 trillion dollars in assets are benchmarked, until at least mid-2027, and only once it posts a full year of GAAP profits. Two of the world's most influential index providers looked at the same company and made opposite calls. Nasdaq is optimised to represent large companies as they actually are. S&P optimised for protecting index investors from unprofitable, unseasoned businesses. Neither choice is neutral, and both now sit permanently inside the fund you may already own.

This isn’t a new phenomenon, only a faster and larger version of an old one. When Tesla joined the S&P 500 in December 2020, the stock was already up more than 700% for the year, carrying a market capitalisation of over 600 billion dollars. Jefferies estimated at the time that funds needed to buy roughly 74 billion dollars worth of Tesla shares, about 118 million shares, equal to three days of its normal trading volume, on a single rebalance day. Tesla fell 6.5% on its actual first day in the index, as traders who had bought ahead of the event sold into the forced demand. Three years later, Tesla shares were up just 6.7% while the S&P 500 itself had climbed roughly 27%, per Bloomberg data, and Apartment Investment and Management, the stock Tesla replaced, outperformed Tesla by a wide margin over the following six months. Index funds tend to buy high. That isn’t a flaw hidden in the fine print. It’s how a market-cap-weighted index is built to work.

Who actually profits from a forced buying event 🏆

Forced buying creates predictable winners and a very predictable trap.

SpaceX was flooded with buy ratings from Stifel and RBC within hours of its inclusion in the index, a pattern that tends to accompany inclusion regardless of where the stock trades a year later. TradingKey’s market commentary this week noted that Palantir and Strategy, two other recent high-profile inclusions, both peaked around their respective inclusion dates before cooling off once the mechanical flow dried up.

SpaceX’s own float is scheduled to expand well before the index rebalances again. Roughly 20% of insider shares become saleable after the August 6 earnings report, with another 10% unlocking if the stock trades 30% above its $135 IPO price for five of any ten consecutive sessions. A staggered slice of the remainder frees up through December 2026. The same mechanism that squeezed the stock higher this week can, in principle, work in reverse once insiders are free to sell into whatever demand is left.

What this means if you hold a Nasdaq 100 fund from India 🇮🇳

This mechanism isn’t a distant US market curiosity. It runs directly through several products Indian retail investors already hold.

The Motilal Oswal Nasdaq 100 ETF alone carries roughly 11,241 crore rupees in assets under management, with a tracking error of just 0.06%, making it one of the primary routes Indian investors use to access the index. Alongside it sit fund of funds structures such as the Motilal Oswal Nasdaq 100 FoF, the ICICI Prudential Nasdaq 100 Index Fund, and offerings from Navi, Invesco, and Axis, all promising the same thing: rupee-based, one-tap exposure to the hundred largest non-financial companies on the Nasdaq. The pitch has worked. The Nasdaq-100 delivered close to 97% returns over the five years to mid-January 2026, and Indian money has followed suit, investing in these funds at scale.

Every one of these vehicles is a passenger on the exact mechanism this article describes. When SpaceX or any future mega IPO gets added, these funds buy it too, using Indian investor money, at the reconstitution price, with zero say from the fund manager on timing or valuation. Someone running a lump sum SIP into a Nasdaq 100 FoF this month has effectively become an indirect part owner of a company that went public less than a month earlier, trading at roughly 54 times its forecast 2026 sales, without ever choosing to make that specific bet. That isn’t a criticism of the fund. It’s simply what tracking an index means, and it’s worth knowing exactly what you signed up for.

What to watch in the months ahead 🔭

The SpaceX inclusion event is over, but the mechanism continues to generate catalysts.

August 6, 2026, doubles as SpaceX’s first earnings report and its first insider lockup expiration, releasing roughly a fifth of insider shares, with a further tranche becoming eligible if the stock has held well above its IPO price. Watch whether float actually expands, or whether insiders choose to sit tight.

September and December 2026 bring Russell index reconstitution windows, during which SpaceX is expected to join the Russell 1000 given FTSE Russell’s relaxed float threshold, triggering a second, separate wave of mechanical buying across a different set of funds. December also brings the Nasdaq-100’s annual reconstitution, when weights get recalculated against updated float, likely pushing SpaceX’s index weight higher as more shares become tradable.

Mid-2027 is the earliest point SpaceX could qualify for the S&P 500, contingent on posting four consecutive quarters of GAAP profitability. That single event would dwarf everything that’s happened so far, given the more than 11 trillion dollars benchmarked to that index.

Beyond SpaceX specifically, the rule itself is now permanent. Any future mega IPO that clears the top-40 market-cap threshold on Nasdaq can expect the same mechanical demand within weeks, rather than the year it once took. The next large private company to list, in AI, defence, or anywhere else, inherits this exact playbook the moment it prices its shares.

The bottom line 🏁

Index funds are not passive in the way the marketing implies. They execute a rulebook that forces predictable, price-insensitive trades on predictable days, and that rulebook is written by index providers, who make judgment calls about float, profitability, and timing that most fund holders never see.

For a diversified long-term investor, this mostly evens out over time and is not a reason to abandon index investing, which remains the cheapest and most reliable way to hold broad market exposure. It is a reason to stop reading a post-inclusion rally as validation of the underlying business, and to recognise that a chunk of every Nasdaq 100 or broad-market fund you hold, Indian wrapper or otherwise, is being continuously reshaped by rules you never voted on. The next time a mega IPO announces it’s joining an index, read it for what it actually is: a scheduled, mechanical trade, not a verdict on the company.

Most investors saw the headline and exhaled. US spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in $221.7 million on July 2, snapping a brutal 10-day, $2.73 billion outflow streak, the kind of number that makes a “bottom is in” thread go viral by lunchtime. But the data underneath that headline tells a different story. The fund that led every previous rally in this asset class barely showed up. If you own IBIT, FBTC, or any Bitcoin ETF, the question isn’t whether the outflows stopped. It’s who actually stopped them.

🎯 Meet Kabir

Kabir, 31, works in fintech operations in Bangalore. Portfolio: ₹38 lakhs, mostly QQQ and VOO for his “boring, long-term” allocation, built up over three years on Winvesta. In February 2026, with Bitcoin ripping toward $95,000 and every finance account on his feed calling it the next leg of the supercycle, he added a ₹4.2 lakh position in IBIT, BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin ETF, as his “5% moonshot.”

It has not felt like a moonshot lately. Bitcoin spent the back half of June falling to a 21-month low near $58,000, and June was the worst month on record for spot Bitcoin ETFs, with roughly $4.1 billion pulled from the category. Kabir’s ₹4.2 lakh position is worth closer to ₹2.8 lakhs now, a drawdown of roughly 33%, and he watched the “10-day outflow streak just ended” headlines last week with the kind of hope that comes from wanting to be told the pain is over.

Here’s what the headline didn’t tell him: the fund he actually owns, IBIT, was still bleeding on the exact day everyone was celebrating the reversal.

📊 What the ETF flows are actually saying

The category-level number looks like relief. The fund-level number looks like something else entirely.

On July 2, the SoSoValue-tracked complex of US spot Bitcoin ETFs took in $221.7 million, the largest single-day haul in two months. Fidelity’s FBTC led with roughly $166 million. ARK and 21Shares’ ARKB added about $92 million. VanEck’s HODL chipped in a small amount. Every fund in the category posted inflows or remained flat, according to The Block’s July 3 flow report, with one exception. BlackRock’s IBIT, the largest Bitcoin ETF by assets and historically the fund that absorbs 70 to 90 per cent of net inflows on a strong day, posted a $40.43 million outflow. It was IBIT’s eleventh straight day of net redemptions, part of a stretch that has drained roughly $2.2 billion from that single fund.

Read those five rows together and the story changes. This wasn’t institutional conviction returning to Bitcoin. It was second-tier issuers absorbing flow while the fund that usually leads kept losing money. Cryptonews called it plainly: a genuine institutional rotation back into Bitcoin should show up broadly across issuers, led by IBIT. What happened on July 2 looked more like tactical, possibly retail, reaccumulation in the smaller funds while the biggest holder of institutional conviction kept walking out the door.

Setup: The July 2 bounce partially holds but doesn’t extend cleanly. IBIT’s outflows slow but don’t reverse. Bitcoin trades in a wide $58,000-66,000 range through the July 14 CPI print and the July 28-29 FOMC meeting, with no clean resolution either way.

Most investors still remember Micron as the stock that ate your patience: a commodity chipmaker whose price rose and fell with PC and phone demand, never holding a rally for long. That memory is now roughly two years out of date. Micron’s fiscal third-quarter revenue came in at $41.46 billion, up about 346% from a year earlier, and the company told investors its high-bandwidth memory chips, the specific product every AI accelerator needs, are booked solid through 2027 with demand stretching into 2028. Three days after that print, a class-action lawsuit accused Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix of colluding to restrict supply. Two days after that, Michael Burry disclosed a short position, calling Micron a “destroyer of capital.” The stock has lost around a fifth of its value since its late-June peak while still sitting on a gain of roughly 700% over the past year. Both things are true at once, and that tension is the entire story right now.

🏭 Not one company, but three memory businesses under one roof

Micron’s headline revenue number hides how differently its three product lines actually behave. DRAM is the largest by far, bringing in $31.3 billion in the fiscal third quarter, about 76% of total revenue, and it is the category where AI demand has bent pricing the hardest. NAND flash storage contributed $9.9 billion, the remaining 24%, and it has ridden the same wave, though at a smaller scale. Sitting inside DRAM is the product line actually driving the re-rating: high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, the stacked chip that sits directly beside every AI accelerator and determines how fast that accelerator can actually run. Data-centre revenue across all of Micron’s product lines reached $25 billion in the quarter, with enterprise SSDs alone contributing $5 billion, about 20% of that figure, per the company’s earnings call.

Micron is one of just three companies in the world that make this category of memory at scale, alongside Samsung and SK Hynix, both of which are based in South Korea. That concentration matters because none of the three can meaningfully expand supply overnight. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra has said Micron can currently fulfil only 50% to two-thirds of customer demand for its products in the medium term, a structural, not seasonal, supply gap. To close it, Micron has broken ground on a $9.3 billion expansion of its Hiroshima, Japan facility, formally started construction on a New York DRAM megafab that could eventually represent up to $100 billion in investment over the next two decades, and completed a $1.8 billion acquisition of a Powerchip fab site in Taiwan. For Indian investors, there’s a direct local thread here too: Micron opened its first Indian assembly and test facility in Sanand, Gujarat, in February, a $2.75 billion combined investment with the Indian government that is expected to assemble and test tens of millions of chips this year, scaling to hundreds of millions in 2027.

⚡ The AI supercycle bet: why HBM is sold out through 2027

The mechanism behind Micron’s numbers is simple to state and hard to unwind quickly. Every large AI accelerator, the kind Nvidia and its rivals ship into hyperscaler data centres, needs HBM sitting next to the processor to feed it data fast enough. As AI training and inference demand has scaled, HBM capacity has become the bottleneck, not raw chip supply. Manufacturing capacity for AI-optimised memory runs three to four times that of traditional computing products, and the three companies that make it have not chased that demand with reckless capacity additions, as memory makers historically did during past booms.

Micron’s response has been to lock in customers rather than just chase spot pricing. The company has signed 16 Strategic Customer Agreements, deals with data-centre operators and automakers that fix pricing and volume for periods of three to five years, and management expects roughly half or more of company revenue to eventually sit under these contracts. Those agreements already carry about $22 billion in financial commitments, including nearly $18 billion in cash deposits, according to the company’s earnings call. On July 1, Micron added General Motors to that list, a supply agreement covering automotive memory and storage for future vehicles, a signal that HBM demand is starting to spread beyond hyperscalers and into industries that simply need more computing power embedded in their products. HBM4, the next generation of the product, began shipping in the first half of calendar 2026 for Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform, and Micron says it is reaching mature yields on that generation meaningfully faster than it did with the prior one. Industry estimates now put the total addressable market for HBM above $100 billion in 2027, up from a fraction of that just a few years ago.

Just a week ago, the AI trade was in freefall. This week it staged one of the sharpest reversals of 2026: chips ripped, the Dow crossed 52,000 for the first time in history, and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq printed new records to cap the strongest quarter Wall Street has seen since the 2020 rebound. The catch? The whole move rested on a two-day snapback in the most beaten-down names, and a jobs report with the power to reprice everything was still sitting in front of the holiday.

📊 Market recap

The week was a story of redemption after a wreck. The prior week had been ugly: a five-session losing streak that knocked the Nasdaq down roughly 4.6% and the S&P 500 about 2%, per CNBC, as fears over AI spending, a possible delay to OpenAI’s IPO, and SpaceX’s rough public debut sent semiconductors tumbling. This week flipped the script almost immediately.

Monday was a blast of relief. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 52,000 for the first time ever, finishing around 52,180, up roughly 0.6%, per CNBC, while the S&P 500 gained about 1.2% and the Nasdaq surged more than 2%. Alphabet made its debut in the Dow, replacing Verizon, and jumped nearly 5% on its first day as a member. The chip complex came roaring back, with the VanEck Semiconductor ETF up more than 3% and names like Astera Labs, KLA and Applied Materials leading a violent turnaround, per CNBC.

Tuesday was quarter-end, and the tape stayed strong. All three major averages rose again, with the Dow notching a second straight record close near 52,320, the S&P 500 settling around 7,450, and the Nasdaq closing near 26,214, per CNBC and TheStreet. Chips did the heavy lifting once more: AMD jumped about 7.7%, Intel added roughly 6%, and Nvidia rose about 2.6%, per Trading Economics. The session closed the books on a remarkable quarter, the best for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq since 2020, per Schwab.

By midweek, the market handed the microphone to the labour market. The back half of this holiday-shortened week was all about jobs: a steady drumbeat of ADP private payrolls and ISM manufacturing on Wednesday, remarks from new Fed chair Kevin Warsh, and, most importantly, the June nonfarm payrolls report due Thursday morning, the last major data before US markets closed Friday for Independence Day. After a quarter defined by AI, the final word this week belonged to the jobs number.

😶‍🌫️ Sentiment watch

Here is the week’s strangest wrinkle: the indexes hit records, but the mood did not celebrate. CNN’s Fear & Greed Index sat in Fear territory, around 27, per readings compiled from CNN Business, even as the Dow and Nasdaq printed all-time highs. The gauge is a smoothed composite, so last week’s washout was still dragging on its momentum, breadth and volatility inputs, and two green days were not enough to pull it back toward neutral.

Volatility told the calmer story. The VIX collapsed into the mid-teens, around 16 to 17, per Cboe data, well down from the low-20s spike during last week’s selloff. That combination, a fear reading on sentiment but a low VIX, captures a market that is nervous about the setup rather than the tape: dip-buyers showed up in force, but nobody is convinced the all-clear has sounded. The tell to watch is breadth. As of Monday, about 64% of S&P 500 stocks traded above their 50-day average, up from roughly 50% a month earlier, per Schwab, a quiet sign the rally is broadening even as the headline gauges flash caution.

Today, Tesla reports its second-quarter delivery numbers, and most retail investors will treat that single figure as the verdict on the company. It is the wrong number to obsess over. The delivery count Tesla releases on July 2 is a unit tally, not a financial result, and the full second-quarter financials will not be available until the earnings call later in July. More to the point, deliveries no longer explain why Tesla trades where it does.

Here is the gap that matters. Tesla’s reported business is a car company whose volumes fell in 2024 and again in 2025, plus a fast-growing energy storage arm and a sticky services line. The stock, by contrast, is priced on what Tesla might become: an autonomy and robotics platform that turns millions of existing cars into a software-driven robotaxi network and sells humanoid robots by the million. Both descriptions are true at the same time. The investing question is not whether Tesla makes good cars; it clearly does, but whether the market has correctly priced a venture-style bet on autonomy and robots that is still mostly unproven, sitting on top of a core car business that is going backwards.

🚗 What Tesla actually is in 2026

Tesla reports two operating segments: automotive and energy generation and storage. Inside those sit three revenue lines that behave very differently from one another. Automotive is still the giant, generating roughly $69.5 billion in 2025, per Tesla’s Q4 2025 shareholder update. Energy generation and storage, built on the Megapack grid battery and the home Powerwall, grew to about $12.8 billion. Services and other, which includes Supercharging, insurance, used-vehicle sales and parts, reached roughly $12.5 billion. On top of these reported lines sits the part of Tesla that has no revenue line of its own yet: full self-driving software, the Robotaxi service, the Dojo and AI-chip effort, and the Optimus humanoid robot.

The way Tesla talks about itself has shifted to match. On the most recent earnings call, CFO Vaibhav Taneja described a strategy where the company now treats full self-driving as the product and the vehicle as the delivery mechanism, per commentary reported by CoinDCX and TIKR. Through 2025, as deliveries fell, Elon Musk steered investor attention toward Robotaxi, Optimus and artificial intelligence rather than the car volumes, a pivot noted across the company’s last several earnings calls.

The logic the bulls are buying is straightforward to state and very hard to prove. Tesla has put more than nine million vehicles on the road, per its Q1 2026 operational summary, many of them carrying the cameras and compute the company says it needs for autonomy. If full self-driving crosses from supervised assistance into genuinely unsupervised driving, that installed base becomes, in theory, a robotaxi fleet that can be switched on by software. Add a humanoid robot aimed at factory and commercial work, and Tesla starts to look less like a carmaker and more like an applied-AI company that happens to manufacture its own hardware. That is the story in the price. The rest of this piece is about how much of it is real today.

🧩 Segment breakdown: where the money actually comes from

The headline number for 2025 declined. Total revenue slipped about 3% to $94.8 billion, Tesla’s first annual revenue drop, per the company’s full-year results. The mix beneath that flat-to-down top line is where the story gets more interesting, as the three lines move in different directions.

Two things stand out. First, automotive did the damage, falling about 10% as volumes dropped and Tesla leaned on price to defend share. Second, the two smaller lines are quietly carrying the growth. Energy storage deployed a record 46.7 gigawatt-hours in 2025, up 49% year over year, per Tesla’s results, and that segment is no longer just selling batteries. In late June, Tesla, Sunrun and Renew Home announced a plan to aggregate more than 16 gigawatts of home energy capacity into a virtual power plant for utilities and data centres, per reporting on the partnership, a sign that energy is becoming a grid-services business as well as a hardware one.

Services and other has compounded for years on the back of an expanding car fleet: more cars on the road means more Supercharging revenue, more insurance, more used-vehicle flow and more out-of-warranty work. It is the most predictable line in the company and the least discussed.

Consider Rohan, a product manager in Pune who bought a few Tesla shares in 2023 because he liked the cars. Two years on, the part of his investment that grew was not the cars at all. It was the battery and grid-services business and the services attached to the existing fleet, lines he never thought about when he hit buy. The headline he keeps watching, deliveries, is the one that went backwards.

🤖 The core bet: robotaxi, full self-driving and a humanoid robot

This is the section that makes or breaks the bull case, and it is worth being precise about what exists today versus what is promised.

Start with Robotaxi. Tesla launched a paid, driverless ride service in Austin in mid-2025 and expanded it to Dallas and Houston in April 2026, using Model Y vehicles, per the company and Electrek. The service runs inside tight geofenced zones, and the fleet is small. Independent trackers and reports put Tesla’s robotaxi count in the low hundreds, and the company does not disclose a weekly trip figure. Tesla also lacks the permits required to run a driverless robotaxi service in California, where its current offering is human-driven, per coverage of the rollout. Management has guided to operating in roughly a dozen US metros by the end of 2026 and to volume production of the purpose-built Cybercab in the second half of the year, both of which are targets rather than shipped facts.

Then there is full self-driving, the software layer that is already generating something today. Tesla reported 1.28 million FSD subscriptions in the first quarter of 2026, per its earnings release, though that figure counts everyone who has bought the package, not only active monthly subscribers, a nuance Electrek and others have flagged. In late June, Tesla began rolling out a version of FSD v14 to older Hardware 3 cars, extending the software to millions of existing vehicles, per reporting from 24/7 Wall St. Tesla has said those older cars cannot run unsupervised driving without hardware changes, so the rollout is about engagement and subscription revenue, not autonomy. Broader expansion into China and Europe is targeted for 2026, subject to regulators, with an EU technical committee discussion on FSD approval flagged for late June.

The third leg is Optimus, the humanoid robot. Tesla has begun preparing production lines, with analysts at Cantor Fitzgerald modelling a Gen 3 ramp in Fremont in the second half of 2026 and only modest initial volumes, on the order of a few thousand units in 2027 rising over the following years, at a starting cost well above the roughly $20,000 Tesla has talked about at scale. Tesla has also said it completed the design of its next-generation AI inference chip and is pursuing a chip-fabrication partnership with SpaceX, per its Q1 2026 update. These are early-stage programmes.

Why does any of this support a $1.5 trillion valuation? Because the price targets that justify the stock are built on these bets paying off. ARK Invest has a 2029 target of $2,600 per share predicated on Optimus meeting production projections, and Wedbush has floated a $2 trillion market-capitalisation case conditional on commercial deployment of Optimus, per their published notes. Morgan Stanley has described the stock as essentially forward-valued, meaning the current business does not support the price on its own. That is the honest summary: the core bet is real, the ambition is enormous, and almost none of it is proven at scale yet.

On June 24, the Nasdaq fell 2.2% in a single session, South Korea’s Kospi crashed 10% and tripped its first trading halt since March, and chip stocks from Seoul to Santa Clara had their worst day in months. Five trading sessions later, the same Nasdaq closed up more than 2%, the Dow broke 52,000 for the first time in its history, and the same chip stocks were leading the rally. Same stocks, same week, opposite story.

That whiplash is the AI bubble debate playing out in real time. Four or five companies are on track to spend somewhere between $450 billion and $700 billion this year alone on chips, data centres and power, depending on which companies you count and whose estimate you use, and every version of that number is larger than what most countries spend running their entire energy sector. A meaningful share of that spending moves through deals where the same dollar shows up as revenue at two or three different companies on its way around a loop. Whether that loop reflects real demand or something closer to financial sleight of hand is now the single most consequential question for anyone holding a US index fund, and most people holding one have never thought about it.

How four companies built a financing web nobody fully understands 🏗️

When we wrote about this AI capex story back in May, the major hyperscalers were on track to spend roughly $600 to $700 billion combined in 2026, nearly tripling the roughly $162 billion the five biggest cloud companies spent in 2022. Two months and one Q1 earnings season later, that range has mostly held. Narrower estimates centred on the core four companies, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Microsoft, sit closer to $450 billion. Broader ones that include Oracle’s cloud arm push past $700 billion. Either way, the spending itself hasn’t slowed. Alphabet guided to $175-$185 billion in 2026 capex, roughly double what it spent in 2025. Amazon flagged around $200 billion.

For a while, the market mostly applauded the spending. Then the cash flow numbers started catching up with it. Alphabet’s free cash flow fell 47% year on year to around $10 billion in the first quarter. Amazon’s trailing twelve-month free cash flow collapsed by roughly 95% to about $1.2 billion. Spending kept rising. The cash actually coming back in fell fast.

That tension came to a head in June for two separate reasons that compounded each other. On June 17, the Federal Reserve held its benchmark rate at 3.5 to 3.75%, the first meeting under new chair Kevin Warsh, and revised its year-end rate projection up to 3.8% from 3.4% in March, signalling that roughly half the committee now sees a hike as more likely than a cut. Higher rates raise the discount applied to any company whose value depends on profits arriving years from now, which describes most of the AI trade. A week later, the AI-specific selloff hit. On June 24, the Nasdaq fell 2.2%, the Kospi fell 10% and triggered a trading halt, SK Hynix and Samsung each lost more than 12%, the newly listed SpaceX fell 16%, and Japan’s SoftBank, which holds a sizeable stake in OpenAI, fell 15% in a single session.

The proximate trigger was a report that OpenAI, the company sitting at the centre of almost every one of these financing deals, was leaning toward delaying its own IPO from 2026 to 2027. OpenAI’s bankers had watched SpaceX rally hard on its debut and then slide, and worried that retail enthusiasm for a second mega-cap tech listing in the same year might not show up twice. If the company anchoring the entire web of AI financing commitments is getting cold feet about its own valuation in public markets, that’s a meaningful data point, whichever way you read it.

Inside the loop, everyone is suddenly asking about 🔁

Strip away the jargon and the mechanism is simple. A chipmaker or cloud provider invests cash into an AI lab. The AI lab spends that cash buying chips or cloud capacity from the same investor, or from a tightly linked group of two or three companies. Each company in the loop can count the transaction as revenue or as contracted backlog. The same dollar effectively gets counted multiple times across multiple income statements, even though only one dollar of new cash ever entered the system.

The specific deals add up fast. Nvidia has agreed to supply OpenAI with 10 gigawatts of systems and has discussed investing up to $100 billion into the company. OpenAI has separately committed roughly $300 billion to Oracle for cloud computing capacity under the Stargate initiative, and Oracle uses a meaningful share of that money to buy more Nvidia chips to build the data centres it owes OpenAI. AMD struck a 6-gigawatt chip supply deal with OpenAI and added warrants for up to 160 million AMD shares at a cent each, vesting as OpenAI hits purchase milestones and AMD’s own stock price climbs toward $600. Microsoft holds roughly a 27% stake in OpenAI, alongside a multi-year Azure commitment from OpenAI valued at $250 billion. CoreWeave, a so-called neocloud that rents out Nvidia capacity, took a $350 million pre IPO equity stake from OpenAI while expanding its own cloud contract with OpenAI to as much as $22.4 billion. Add it up and OpenAI alone has signed something in the order of $600 billion in future computing commitments, against roughly $13 billion in 2025 revenue and a $38.5 billion net loss the same year. Across the wider Nvidia, OpenAI, Oracle, Microsoft, AMD and CoreWeave web, various 2026 estimates put the total scale of circular financing arrangements above $800 billion.

Economist Ed Yardeni’s research team has tried to run what they call a capex payback test: do OpenAI and Anthropic’s revenue growth rates look fast enough to eventually justify the spending hyperscalers are committing on their behalf? Their conclusion, as of mid-2026, is that the picture is not yet fully revenue-backed, but it improves meaningfully by the early 2030s if current growth holds. That’s a more measured answer than either side of the debate wants to admit, neither proof of fraud nor proof of safety.

The defenders of these arrangements have a real argument, not just a talking point. Vendor financing, where a supplier helps fund its own customer, isn’t new or inherently fraudulent. Aircraft manufacturers and telecom equipment makers have done it for decades. The chips and data centres being built are real, usable assets rather than vapourware, and they can in principle be redeployed if a specific AI lab fails. And there’s genuinely independent evidence that demand for compute is outstripping supply right now, not just inside the loop.

That evidence shows up in the memory chip market, an industry the AI story barely touches in most coverage, but one that is currently living through what traders have started calling RAMmageddon. Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron, who together control more than 90% of global DRAM and HBM production, have shifted somewhere around 90 to 93% of their combined output toward the high-bandwidth memory that AI accelerators need, leaving a shrinking slice of capacity for the ordinary memory chips that go into phones, laptops and cars. DRAM prices rose roughly 90% in the first quarter of 2026 alone compared with the previous quarter. SK Hynix’s HBM order book is reportedly sold out through 2027. Samsung’s memory division now generates close to 94% of the company’s total quarterly profit. None of that can be faked by circular contracts between four companies. It’s showing up as higher prices for laptops and smartphones that have nothing to do with AI, which is about as close to independent confirmation of real demand as this debate gets. It’s also, on its own, a cost the rest of the economy is quietly absorbing regardless of how the bubble debate eventually resolves.

Who wins if the spending keeps going, and who loses either way 🏆

Not every company touched by this debate is exposed the same way, and the differences matter more than the headline Nasdaq number suggests.

The memory makers are living through what their own executives have called a golden era, with gross margins in the 63 to 67% range, comfortably ahead of even TSMC’s foundry margins, because they can charge AI customers premium prices for HBM while consumer-grade memory runs short everywhere else. That golden era is also their biggest vulnerability. Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron have walked away from large parts of the ordinary consumer memory business to chase AI margins, which means a pause in AI infrastructure spending would hit them on both sides at once.

Nvidia’s own numbers make the bull case look strong in isolation. Its most recent quarterly revenue rose 85% year on year to $81.6 billion, with the data centre business alone up 92% to $75.2 billion. The complication is that Nvidia is also the most direct counterparty in nearly every circular financing arrangement under scrutiny, so its results are simultaneously the best evidence that AI demand is real and the hardest evidence to take entirely at face value.

Among the hyperscalers themselves, the market has become much less forgiving about who gets credit for spending and who gets punished for it. Alphabet’s cloud division posted strong double-digit growth with an expanding enterprise backlog and was rewarded. Microsoft’s AI revenue line grew sharply, and it was rewarded, too. Meta grew revenue 33% in its most recent quarter and was punished anyway, because investors read its capex increase and accompanying capital raise as a company spending on hope rather than showing a visible near-term payoff. Show the market cloud revenue growing faster than capex, and the bull case holds. Raise capex without showing where the extra revenue comes from, and the stock gets sold regardless of how the broader AI story is going.

What this means if you’re an Indian investor in US tech 🇮🇳

On June 18, Accenture trimmed its full-year revenue growth guidance by exactly one percentage point, from a 3 to 5% range down to 3 to 4%. Its stock fell nearly 18% on Wall Street the same day, reportedly its steepest single-day drop as a public company. By the next morning in India, the damage had already crossed an ocean. The Nifty IT index sank by close to 6%, hitting a more than three-year low. Infosys fell as much as 8% intraday to around Rs 1,034, its lowest level in five years. TCS fell over 6% to around Rs 2,060, near a six-year low. HCL Tech, Wipro and Tech Mahindra all fell between 3 and 7%. By some reports, Indian IT stocks lost more than Rs 1.35 lakh crore in market value in a single session, because of one percentage point in an American consulting firm’s guidance.

That single day was the sharpest expression of a trend that’s been building all year. The Nifty IT index is down roughly 29 to 32% so far in 2026, against a high single-digit decline for the broader Nifty 50, and the combined weight of India’s five largest IT exporters in the Nifty 50 has fallen below 7.6%, the lowest level since at least 2002. At its peak more than two decades ago, the same cohort accounted for over a fifth of the index. IT has slipped to the fifth-largest sector in the Nifty 50, behind financials, consumer discretionary, energy, and industrials.

This isn’t only a market story. India’s top five IT firms reportedly cut headcount on a net basis in the financial year that ended in March, having added meaningfully more the year before, and gross hiring across the top five firms has fallen well below the average of the previous five years, with TCS alone guiding to noticeably fewer campus hires this year than its recent norm. Every part of the AI capex story that reads as an infrastructure opportunity on the US side of your portfolio is, on the Indian side, showing up as fewer campus placements, fewer promotions, and fewer new positions at the companies that have employed a generation of Indian engineers.

The two sides of this trade can sit in the same portfolio without you noticing. If you hold a broad US equity index fund through Winvesta alongside Indian IT stocks at home, you’re simultaneously long the infrastructure buildout that’s putting pressure on the outsourcing model, and long the outsourcing companies absorbing that pressure. Layered on top of that, anyone holding what looks like a diversified US index fund is, in practice, holding a concentrated AI bet whether they realise it or not. The Magnificent Seven alone account for roughly 32 to 35% of the S&P 500’s market value, up from around 12% a decade ago, and AI-linked names more broadly make up something closer to a quarter to a third of the index. The diversification a typical index fund investor assumes they’re getting and the concentration they’re actually carrying are two different things right now, and the gap between them is exactly what this entire debate is about.

The currency dimension adds one more layer. The rupee touched a record low near 96.8 against the dollar in May before recovering to around 94.3-94.5 by late June as oil prices fell back from their Iran war highs. If the AI trade cracks hard, the most likely accompanying scenario, based on what just happened on June 17, is the Federal Reserve holding rates higher for longer rather than cutting, which tends to support the dollar in the near term. That would mean a US tech sell-off and a firmer dollar showing up at the same time, squeezing rupee returns from both the price and currency sides together rather than one offsetting the other.

The five signals that actually tell you which way this breaks 🧭

Q2 2026 earnings season, landing through late July, is the first real test of whether the June scare changes anyone’s spending plans. Watch capex guidance specifically from Meta, which faces the sharpest investor scrutiny on return on spending, and watch whether AWS, Azure and Google Cloud can keep growing revenue faster than their owners are growing capex. That gap, not the headline spending number, is the one number that tells you whether the bull case is intact.

OpenAI and Anthropic’s IPO timing functions as a live sentiment gauge for the whole sector, given how much of the financing web runs through OpenAI specifically. A further delay, or a listing that prices meaningfully below the trillion-dollar figure Sam Altman has reportedly been holding out for, would be read as a verdict on the entire structure. A clean listing, alongside Anthropic’s reported move toward its first profitable quarter in Q2 2026, would do the opposite.

Memory prices and HBM supply are the closest thing to an independent lie detector here. If DRAM and HBM prices keep climbing through the back half of 2026, that’s continued evidence of demand outrunning supply. If they crack, particularly once Micron’s new Idaho fab or SK Hynix’s Yongin cluster bring on capacity closer to 2027 and 2028, that eases the one part of this story that has nothing to do with circular financing.

The Fed’s path under Kevin Warsh matters more to this trade than most investors currently price in. Roughly half the committee now sees a 2026 rate hike as more likely than a cut, a reversal from where things stood in March. Any data that pushes that further toward an actual hike raises the discount rate applied to exactly the kind of long-duration, spend-now, profit-later companies that dominate the AI trade.

Indian IT’s own Q1 FY27 results, due from Infosys and TCS in July, will show whether the Accenture-driven selloff was a one-off scare or the start of a deeper repricing. Deal win commentary, and revenue growth guidance from both companies will move Nifty IT more than almost anything else over the following month.

The bottom line 🏁

The honest case against calling this a repeat of 2000 is specific, not vague reassurance. One widely cited analysis put the Nasdaq 100’s trailing multiple at roughly 33 times earnings, compared with close to 60 times at the March 2000 peak. A separate Fidelity analysis found the Magnificent Seven trading around 28 times forward earnings, less than half the roughly 66 times the seven largest US stocks by market cap commanded in 1999. The hyperscalers funding this buildout are, even with falling free cash flow, still generating real operating profit, unlike most of the infrastructure builders of the dot-com era who were burning cash with no revenue at all. And the physical assets being built- chips, data centres, power contracts- are largely redeployable rather than the fibre optic cable left dark and unused after 2001.

The honest case for genuine concern is equally specific. A relatively small group of companies is simultaneously each other’s biggest customers, biggest suppliers, and biggest investors, which means trouble at any one node travels quickly to the rest. Free cash flow at the companies doing the spending is falling even as the spending itself accelerates. And the market, after the June scare, has made clear it will punish any company that raises capex without a correspondingly visible payoff, which leaves very little room for disappointment from here.

The useful distinction for your own portfolio is between two different questions that keep getting collapsed into one. Is the underlying technology overhyped? Probably not, and the memory chip shortage is independent proof that real, paying demand for compute exists well beyond what any circular financing arrangement could fake on its own. Are the specific financing structures and valuations built around that technology fragile? That’s a genuinely open question, and the answer isn’t the same for every company sitting inside the loop.

The whiplash week that opened this piece- a brutal selloff followed five days later by a sharp rally in the exact same stocks- is the market itself admitting it hasn’t decided. Until it does, the more useful move is to know what you actually own, rather than guessing which way it breaks. A US index fund is not the diversified holding most people assume it is right now, and an Indian portfolio that pairs that index fund with domestic IT stocks is running both sides of this exact debate at once.
